People in the MMA community have always been confused that Khabib Nurmagomedov’s father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov is also the father of Islam Makhachev when it is not the case. Father figure? Yes. Father? No. Islam Makhachev’s father is NOT Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, though his real father’s name has remained unknown.
Makhachev chooses to keep his family’s identities a secret to maintain their privacy. After being crowned the UFC Lightweight champion, he went back to his hometown where he was born in Makhachkala, to meet his family and fans got to see his father for the first time.

Islam Makhachev’s relationship with his actual father
With no information about Islam Makhachev’s family, one would be led to assume that he doesn’t have a great relationship with them. But that isn’t the case with him, he just respects his family’s privacy a bit too much.
When Islam returned to Makhachkala region in Dagestan, where he was born – he was obviously welcomed a hero. But amongst all that, the fans got to see his family for the first time when he put his UFC Lightweight championship belt around his father. Islam seemed to get emotional at the sight of his father holding his belt since as a child he might’ve always wanted his father to see what he achieved.
Makhachev managed to keep his family a secret from the world, for their own sake. Islam got married last year with a big ceremony being held, but no one knows who his wife is. This is something he has managed to protect for a long time, and if the fans respect it he would also be tension free and deliver as he promises.
Makhachev’s relationship with his late coach – Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov
Now for the man who is assumed to be his father – Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. Abdulmanap is just the coach who trained Islam Makhachev enough to turn him from average Joe to an absolute beast in the octagon.
Abdulmanap used to coach his son, Khabib and Islam together. It is because of him that they are what they are today in the octagon. He instilled in them the fighter skills, abilities, and discipline needed to become the champion. This is the reason why Islam mentioned him but not his father during his post-fight octagon interview when he won the belt. Since he knew that he is because of the training Abdulmanap put him through.
All three of them have always been seen together while training or in the corner for Khabib’s fight, against Conor McGregor for example. People have assumed that all three of them are related when it is just Khabib who is related to Abdulmanap while Islam is the student.
