Khabib Nurmagomedov’s unbeaten record was very much at risk in his fight against Dustin Poirier back in 2019. “The Eagle” was very close to being submitted in front of his father/mentor by Poirier at UFC 242, or at least that’s what we thought.
At UFC 242, Khabib Nurmagomedov was in a very risky position with Dustin Poirier as the Louisiana fighter caught the Dagestani in a very tight Guillotine choke. However, Nurmagomedov managed to get out of the choke and then went on to finish Poirier on the ground.
Khabib says that it was borderline silly that Poirier thought he could finish Nurmagomedov while his father/mentor, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov was sitting cageside. “It was in front of father, it was like maybe 2 meters. Maybe very close when Dustin tried to choke me,” recapped Nurmagomedov of this moment at UFC 242.
“And I’m thinking like Dustin is a crazy guy. He thinks I’m gonna tap in front of my father?” said Nurmagomedov as he laughed off his former rival’s attempt to tap the Dagestani out. Khabib and his father share a very profound relationship and the former champion has always spoken highly of the later Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov.

No matter what went down in the octagon against Dustin Poirier, “tapping out” was never an option for the Dagestani as his hero was sitting right there in hopes of his son defending his title. Moments like this are what made the fans appreciate Khabib Nurmagomedov more.
