Stipe Miocic has now enjoyed a long absence away from the octagon, having last fought in March 2021, where he lost the heavyweight belt to Francis Ngannou. Needless to say, he has endured some criticism for it.

2022 could have marked the long-anticipated arrival of Miocic, who is widely considered to be one of the heavyweight greats, alongside names like Cain Velasquez. A month or two back, rumours started floating of a potential super showdown between Miocic and Jon Jones – that, however, was not to be as the veteran allegedly didn’t sign the contract.

However, it could be due to turbulent times in Miocic’s life. The Ohio native wrote a heartfelt post about his father’s passing, saying “This took a little bit to write this, I didn’t want to post about it, but I want everyone to know… my father passed away this past Sunday… it’s important to remember & celebrate his life and what a wonderful man he was…Rest in peace and I know you’ll be watching over us.

Something else that he wrote also stands out – “I don’t like sharing personal things on social media, but it’s important to remember & celebrate his life and what a wonderful man he was.” Given the recent criticism he has faced for being out of action for almost two years, it is important for fans and analysts to step back and let the aspect of having a personal life factor into any judgement given. The passing of his father could have been the element that kept Miocic out for a lengthy period.
