UFC 289 will return to Canada after four years. The last time UFC put on a PPV card in Canada happened before Covid-19. UFC 289 will feature the return of Amanda Nunes to defend her bantamweight crown against Mexican contender Irene Aldana. Nunes returns after avenging her championship loss to Julianna Pena in 2022. She was supposed to defend her title in a trilogy bout against Pena, but an injury forced Pena to withdraw.
Irene Aldana took the replacement opportunity to compete in her first crack at the world title. Aldana will look to follow in the footsteps of other Mexican champions like Brandon Moreno, Alexa Grasso, and Yair Rodriguez to become the next champion from Mexico. If she can defeat Nunes, she will become the second Mexican woman to hold a UFC gold.
Despite the title on the line, fans are most excited about the co-main event of the UFC 289 fight card. Former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira will take on surging contender Beneil Dariush in a title eliminator bout. Both Oliveira and Dariush are known for their admiration and belief in god. It will be interesting to see who comes out on top. The bout is a dream fight for the fans regarding the skill level and techniques of the lightweight contenders.
Dariush is on an eight-fight winning streak and positioned himself to be the next challenger for the title if he can defeat Oliveira at UFC 289. However, Oliveira can compete for the title if he can get past the Assyrian fighter. Find out more details about the UFC 289 PPV.
