7 time world champion Lewis Hamilton recently collaborated with world-renowned contemporary artist Takashi Murakami and went on to release a state of the art, limited edition merchandise collection ahead of the Japanese GP. This collaboration has been instigated between Mr Murakami and Lewis’s +44 merch site. Fans were eagerly waiting for the items to release but were taken aback when they finally discovered the prices.

A high profile collaboration between two extremely important personalities realistically meant that it would be a premium collection. However fans still expected Lewis Hamilton and to make the limited edition merchandise affordable. It seems that it was too late to do so and it was clear that there would be public outrage when the collection would release and such seemed to be the case. If the Mercedes driver would have considered the possible outcome that this price point would bring, the situation could have been handled better.

While some fans proudly showed Lewis the items that they had purchased, many others expressed their displeasure with the prices. The collection which is a collaboration between him and Mr Murakami was priced between 60-200 dollars and that it without adding delivery charges, import duties and normal taxes. This made the prices very unreasonable for many individuals leading to this situation. Here is how Twitter reacted to the whole fiasco.

Even though this incident is a bit hilarious, it sheds light on F1 merch in general and how overpriced it is. Although when it comes to Daniel Ricciardo and Lewis Hamilton’s merchandise, it is a class apart from anyone else. It cannot match the team polos either. The carefully designed pieces justify their price to some point. If the fans are spending such an amount on merch, they need more benefits included with it.
