“WWE title picture looked empty” – Journalist reveals real reason behind the return of Brock Lesnar vs Roman Reigns contest at SummerSlam 2022

Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar last clashed at Wrestlemania this year

2022 SummerSlam is approaching close and the fiercest of opponents are getting ready to pick a fight. Yes, we are talking about Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns. Since winning the Universal Championship over two years ago, Roman Reigns has been in charge of the WWE championship race.

Sometimes, it appears that there is no one in the current WWE lineup that can challenge Reigns’ empire. However, it seems the wrestling promotion has some different plans. As a significant step, the company has brought Brock Lesnar back in style so that he could challenge The Head of the Table this July.

During past week’s Friday SmackDown, Reigns was taken aback by Brock Lesnar’s surprise. And now sources have revealed that Brock Lesnar’s faceoff against Roman Reigns was not initially on WWE’s cards.

Understandably, as Wrestling Observer Newsletter’s Dave Meltzer claimed, the WWE chose to greenlight the Reigns vs. Lesnar contest because of two main reasons. The first reason is prominent wrestlers like Randy Orton as well as Cody Rhodes have suffered long-term injuries. Another reason was that the organization thought Lesnar is the only respectable superstar who can challenge a behemoth like Roman Reigns.

Meltzer said, “‘Following injuries to Randy Orton and Cody Rhodes, and blowing off Riddle on Smackdown, the WWE title picture looked empty again, which led to the return of Brock Lesnar.”

It was in WrestleMania 38 when Reigns defeated Brock to lift the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship title. After their confrontation at WrestleMania, the WWE universe thought that the rivalry between these is over. But that was far from the reality.

Fast forward three months and the duo will meet each other in a Last Man Standing contest in SummerSlam. Understandably, the ring will be full of blood and aggression as The Beast Incarnated will attempt to take his revenge for the Wrestlemania defeat. On the other hand, Roman Reigns will try his best to not only defend his title but also his reputation. Indeed, it might become the bout of the year!
