The whole WWE Universe was left heartbroken at the end of the Elimination Chamber PLE on February 18th. While many had expected Roman Reigns to retain his titles in Montreal, the hometown support for Sami Zayn had swung some momentum in his favor. In the end, though, the former Honorary Uce remains out of the main event of WrestleMania as Cody Rhodes will be the sole challenger for the world title moving forward. However, according to the tag team legend Matt Hardy, this was the right decision by WWE.
Speaking on his “Extreme Life of Matt Hardy” podcast, the AEW star has commended WWE’s booking of the Bloodline story as well as the booking of Cody Rhodes since his return. Talking about the latter, Hardy said that WWE is invested in the American Nightmare. He cited that grueling Hell in a Cell match from last year as a case in point. Matt believed that it was clear that Cody will have big plans as soon as he defeated Seth Rollins thrice, including with a completely torn pec.
The Broken one also talked about that Roman Reigns vs. Sami Zayn match in Montreal, saying, “I don’t think it hurts Sami one bit. If anything, that loss elevated Sami. It didn’t hurt him. It helped him. Also, you have a built-in competitor for Cody down the road with Sami. They can have a match. Sami is a legitimate world champion-level competitor right now following this thing with The Bloodline. It truly elevated him to another level. They did right by Sami and it was the right call. I fully believe it was the right call.” (h/t WrestlingNews.co)
Matt Hardy weighs in on Cody Rhodes’ return to WWE

Being part of AEW, Matt Hardy has worked with Cody Rhodes very closely. One-half of Team Extreme said that he is amazed to see the former AEW EVP in the main event of WrestleMania this year. This is because “Cody is a guy who left Alexandria, went to the outside, built himself up, helped found AEW, and made it into a big deal and an actual number two pro wrestling company on the globe.”
Matt believes that the Grandson of a Plumber has earned the respect of everyone in WWE by reinventing himself of his own accord. While people within WWE might look at Cody as a “rebel”, they wanted to capitalize on the Prodigal Son’s return and immediately pushed him to the moon. Like many fans, Hardy believes that Cody should dethrone Roman Reigns at WrestleMania saying, “that’s the way to go.”
