Bill Goldberg returned to WWE in 2016 after a 12-year absence. Fans were excited to see the powerhouse wrestler back in action, and WWE wasted no time in setting up his first feud. Goldberg shocked the world by defeating Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series in a quick and dominant fashion. He hit Lesnar with two spears and a jackhammer, pinning him in just 86 seconds. The crowd was stunned, and Goldberg’s return was officially a success.
He also went on to win the Universal championship before dropping it to Brock Lesnar in their rematch at WrestleMania 33. Goldberg continued to make sporadic appearances and had a few more matches with the company. Overall, Goldberg’s WWE run after 2016 was characterised by sporadic appearances and high-profile matches against top stars.
However, after a point, fans got fed up with Goldberg just showing up and challenging for the top titles. His infamous match against The Undertaker in a Saudi event received massive backlash from the wrestling world. He even ruined Bray Wyatt‘s alter ego, The Fiend, by capturing the Universal title with a clean victory.
In his last match, Goldberg lost to Roman Reigns at the Elimination Chamber last year, when Reigns was in God-mode. The former WCW champion hasn’t made any WWE TV appearances since. He recently addressed his wish to have a retirement match for a proper farewell from the wrestling ring.
However, before the legend could have a farewell match, his contract with the WWE reportedly recently expired. Following the expiration of his contract, Bill Goldberg is reported to be a free agent now. Hence, it remains to be seen whether he quits wrestling for good or continues to wrestle for other promotions.
