The latest episode of SmackDown saw the latest installment in the Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns rivalry. The fans didn’t have to wait long, as both superstars came face-to-face in the opening segment of the show. During his emotional promo, the American Nightmare made a reference to his past that has grabbed the attention of his former Elite partners, The Young Bucks.
In his one-on-one confrontation with the Tribal Chief, Cody Rhodes talked about how he constantly had to prove himself. To emphasize his point, Cody referenced his time with Legacy, under Randy Orton, as well as his “Stardust” gimmick. However, what came as a surprise to fans was that Cody even managed to make a reference to the “All In” PPV in his promo.
This reference grabbed the attention of The Young Bucks, who were co-producers of the historic 2018 PPV. The AEW Trios Champion gave a nod to their former Elite member, changing their Twitter bio to read, “All In.” Bucks are known for their cryptic Twitter bios, which tease and sometimes troll the fans. Nevertheless, this seemed like a good-spirited gesture from AEW EVPs, who don’t seem to have any animosity with their former cohort.
The nod to his past was a nice touch from Cody Rhodes. Moreover, WWE allowing him to acknowledge the biggest independent wrestling PPV was refreshing to watch as well. This recent confrontation between Rhodes and Reigns was probably the first of many on the road to WrestleMania.

Cody Rhodes’ journey to the WrestleMania main event
After leaving WWE in 2016, The American Nightmare re-invented himself as a top star in the independent scene. He traveled across nations and promotions to prove himself. After having matches in upwards of 30 promotions, Cody took on the challenge of putting on the biggest wrestling PPV outside of WWE since 1993. As the fans know it, this not only changed the course of Cody’s career but wrestling as a whole, leading to the creation of AEW.
Cody Rhodes has come a long way from All In and the indie shows, but he still doesn’t miss a chance to show his gratitude for his past. The former AEW EVP now has a shot to complete the story that his father started before he was even born. This emotionally charged story has led most fans to believe that the Grandson of a Plumber would be the one to end the historic title reign of Roman Reigns at the Showcase of the Immortals.
