Top Masked WWE Superstars of all time

Mysterio and The Fiend

Masked WWE Superstars are quite a common sight. The masks are donned for several reasons – gimmicks, injury-induced and are specially a part of the Lucha Libre style of professional wrestling. Ironically, the masks have become a part of the daily life for the entire world, but they again came to limelight in WWE, when Universal Champion Roman Reigns donned a mask during his recent match at WWE Extreme Rules 2021.

Currently, the WWE main roster features several masked Superstars. In addition to Rey Mysterio, Sheamus and Nikki A.S.H. currently don a mask. While The Celtic Warrior wears one due to his broken nose, Nikki’s is a part of her superhero gimmick. They have been donning the masks for just a little while and it remains to be seen whether they taste same success as the other masked stars.

Here is our list for the Top 5 Masked WWE Superstars

#1 Rey Mysterio

Rey Mysterio

Inarguably, Rey Mysterio is the most popular masked WWE Superstar of all time. He wears the mask due to its massive significance in the Lucha Libre style of professional wrestling. Mysterio has been the most influential Superstars in helping this style of professional wrestling gain main-stream popularity.

The mask is considered to be quite sacred for luchadors and having it removed is considered to be big insult. In fact, WWE has often used this as a match stipulation and there have been several occasions when Mysterio has been unmasked.

#2 “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt

“The Fiend” Bray Wyatt

The Fiend” Bray Wyatt is one of the most famous masked WWE Superstars. Unlike Mysterio, Wyatt donned the mask as a part of his The Fiend gimmick. The supernatural gimmick was really loved by the fans and the creepy mask really added to the overall character. In fact, the mask was itself an important part of the entire gimmick. Even after introducing the mask, Wyatt appeared unmasked during the Firefly Fun House segments.

Unfortunately, the character never reached the full potential and Wyatt was released from the company. Wyatt is expected to appear on some other promotion soon and we hope that he gets the opportunity to tap into the full potential of the character.

#3 Kane

Kane

Kane’s character is probably the epitome of integrating the mask into a story. Even before Kane debuted his masked character – there was entire backstory which justified the reason for donning the mask. The storyline half-brother of The Undertaker had been scarred by a fire, which was started by Taker!

Initially the mask covered the entire face, but over the years it was altered to a half-mask. He was unmasked in 2003, in one of the most memorable WWE moments, where he even debuted a shaved head look. Since then, he has continued to bring back the look on several occasions.

Honorable Mentions

Punk

Over the years, there have been several Superstars who have donned the mask for injury related reasons. Cody Rhodes had worn it after an injury. One of the biggest Superstars, CM Punk had worn it too. But it was after his head was shaved by Rey Mysterio due to a match stipulation. On the other hand some have worn it for the superhero gimmicks – Hurricane Helms and Nikki A.S.H.
