Universal Champion Roman Reigns would’ve preferred a different Royal Rumble opponent

Reigns and Rollins
Roman Reigns has completed over 500 days as the Universal Champion. In his year and a half long reign, the Tribal Chief has emerged victorious in feuds against the likes of John Cena, Finn Balor, Edge, Daniel Bryan and Kevin Owens among others. He has held the title since WWE Payback 2020 and has virtually gone through all the top stars of the Smackdown brand.
Reigns’ biggest challenger till date arrived in the final moments of Summerslam 2021 – in the form of the Beast Incarnate, Brock Lesnar. They collided for the first time at Crown Jewel. The Head of the Table emerged victorious after interferences from Paul Heyman and The Usos. They were all set to have a rematch at Day 1, but Reigns was taken off the card due to testing positive for Covid.
WWE decided to add Brock Lesnar to the WWE Championship match – which he went on to win. This led to a massive change in the original plans and Lesnar went on to feud against Bobby Lashley. This posed another problem for the company – as they once again were looking for a new challenger. They found their answer on the red brand – in Seth Rollins.
On the latest episode of Smackdown, the former Shield brothers came face to face in the ring and delivered a blockbuster promo. The Monday Night Messiah tried his best to get into his opponent’s head, and managed to do it till some extent, but the universal Champion was able to take him down with a massive insult.
Roman Reigns revealed that he would’ve rather faced his wife than Seth Rollins himself. “If I wanted to main event the Royal Rumble with a megastar, I would’ve chose your wife,” mentioned the Tribal Chief. The current Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch is Seth Rollins’ wife.
Rumored Roman Reigns – Seth Rollins match winner

The long-term goal for WWE is to have Roman Reigns battle against Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania 38. Reportedly, these plans haven’t changed despite the swerve that took place at WWE Day 1. While the plan remains same, the route to reach there has changed significantly.
At Royal Rumble, Brock Lesnar is expected to retain the WWE Championship and hold the title till Wrestlemania. On the other hand, Roman Reigns is being rumored to lose the Universal Champion to Seth Rollins and head into Mania as a Challenger for the WWE Championship!
