Reigns recreates "The Shield" betrayal moment

Roman Reigns has been the Universal Champion for 516 days now. This is the longest single reign in the history of the title. Over a reign that has spanned for nearly two years, the Tribal Chief has defeated the likes of John Cena, Edge and Brock Lesnar among others. While his feud with the Beast Incarnate got sidelined after Day 1, WWE kicked off another massive dream feud.

On an episode of Smackdown, WWE official Adam Pearce announced Seth Rollins as Reigns’ Royal Rumble opponent. The two Superstars have massive history together, as friends and as foes. Tehe Tribal Chief and the Monday Night Messiah debuted together on the main roster as members of The Shield.

Considered to be one of the best stables in the professional wrestling industry, “The Shield” included AEW star Jon Moxley too. One of their most iconic feuds was against The Authority. But the feud is infamous for Seth Rollins’ betrayal. In one of the most iconic moments of “The Shield”, Rollins attacked Reigns and Moxley with a steel chair to betray his brothers and align himself with Triple H’s Authority.

Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins collided in the opening match of Royal Rumble 2022. The fast paced match was marred by a disappointing ending, with Reigns picking up the win via disqualification. But what stood out in the match was the Universal Champion recreating the moment “The Shield” imploded!

After the match ended, Roman Reigns took out the steel chair and attacked Rollins in the same manner the Monday Night Messiah had attacked him years ago! The moment managed to turn Rollins face and get more heat on Reigns. You can check out the iconic recreation from the Royal Rumble here:

At Royal Rumble, the Universal Champion Roman Reigns walked out alone – without The Usos or Paul Heyman. While all his successful title defenses have included them in some way or the other, at Rumble, Reigns managed to retain his title all by his own!

With Reigns managing to retain via disqualification, it is quite likely that we are indeed heading towards a Champion vs Champion match at Wrestlemania 38. While Lesnar vs Lashley is yet to take place, it seems highly unlikely that the Beast Incarnate will be dropping the title.
