WrestleMania 39 would easily go down as one of the best, if not the best, WrestleManias to date. With a grand stage, spectacular entrances, and a sold-out crowd at the SoFi Stadium, WrestleMania truly went Hollywood this year.

Being the platform where everyone steps up and puts on the performance of a lifetime, this year was no different, with each match being compelling and exciting. However, some matches were able to stand out from the rest, so here are the top 5 such matches that stole the show:

5. Gunther vs. Drew McIntyre vs. Sheamus for Intercontinental Championship:

Over the year, the IC championship has been the cause of some of the most spectacular matches in WrestleMania history. The classic that was Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon is still fresh in our minds. The last time Gunther and Sheamus got involved in a match for the IC championship, they put on a hard-hitting match that impressed both critics and fans alike.

Gunther is prolific on the mat, a sound technician who’s won accolades all over. Sheamus is a veteran of the company, a workhorse who is sometimes felt to be underutilized, and then you add Drew McIntyre, the former WWE champion. It was obvious this was going to be a banger. How much of a banger was the question to be answered, and boy, did they put on a show. Technically sound and hard-hitting is perhaps the easiest way to describe the match.

4. Edge vs Demon Balor Hell in a Cell match

What do you get when you put a Hall of Famer, a man known for being part of some of the most classic matches in WWE history, and, on the other hand, a man who honed his craft all over the world? Together inside a 20-foot structure where you’re only limited by your own imagination. Edge has made the most of what many speculate is his last WrestleMania, and he wants to go out with a bang. That is indeed what he did when he and Finn Balor (in his demon persona) put on what many consider a match-of-the-year candidate.

3. Six-Women Tag Match (Trish Stratus, Lita, and Becky Lynch vs Damage CTRL)

Becky Lynch is arguably one of the biggest stars in sports entertainment today. Being the winner of the first-ever women’s WrestleMania main event, she solidified her position as a megastar. Ever since they made their presence felt at SummerSlam of 2022, Damage CTRL has been an integral component of the women’s division.

Given the fact that Becky Lynch and Bayley are among the four horsewomen of the women’s revolution, it only seemed fitting that they face each other at the Showcase of the Immortals. Add in the likes of Hall of Famers Trish Stratus and Lita, and fans have an interesting matchup. While many were skeptical about the quality of the match before the show, the women set the stage on fire, putting on an amazing performance.

2. Usos vs Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn for Undisputed Tag Team Championships

The Bloodline storyline was the best thing happening in WWE over the past year, period. It was storytelling at its best, Sami Zayn working hard to gain his place in the stable, Jey Uso being skeptical of him, Zayn low-blowing Kevin Owens and letting Jey pin him at war games, and finally Sami turning on the Bloodline by driving a chair to Roman’s back.

It only made sense that Zayn and KO be the ones to take the championships of The Usos and what better place than the Showcase of the Immortals? Zayn and KO have honed their craft in the indie circuit, having traveled and wrestled everywhere, and as it stands, you cannot have a conversation about the greatest tag team of all time without mentioning The Usos. A perfect ending for Night 1 of WrestleMania.

1. Cody Rhodes vs Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship

Roman Reigns is the needle mover of WWE; ever since he took on the Tribal Chief persona, the man has been on a different level. He packs up stadiums, he sells merch, he elevates those around him. Then we have Cody Rhodes, the prodigal son who returned to fulfill the dream of becoming a champion. A match perfectly set to headline WrestleMania 39.

Granted, many were left upset with Roman retaining, but there is no denying that it was an epic match. When everything’s said and done, Roman Reigns will indeed go down as one of the greatest of all time.
