The Los Angeles Rams have made one of the biggest moves in recent NFL history by acquiring star pass rusher Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns. The trade has already created excitement among Rams fans, but many supporters are now hoping for something even bigger: the return of Aaron Donald.

Garrett arrives in Los Angeles after a historic 2025 season with the Browns, where he set the NFL’s single-season sacks record. The Rams acquired him in a major trade that sent Jared Verse and three draft picks to Cleveland.

Since the trade was announced, speculation has grown about whether Aaron Donald could come out of retirement and return to the Rams. Donald retired after the 2023 season and is widely regarded as one of the greatest defensive linemen in NFL history. Recent comments from Donald have added fuel to the discussion.

Speaking with reporters over the past week, he admitted that Garrett’s arrival in Los Angeles has caught his attention. Donald said he is trying to find the motivation and competitive drive needed to return to the field.

Myles Garrett also expressed excitement about the possibility of playing alongside Donald. In a video shared by the Rams on social media, Garrett said he has not yet spoken with Donald but expects to do so soon.

We haven’t talked yet, but definitely expect to talk soon. I don’t know what his plans are, and I won’t pretend to know, but a lot of people are excited and thrilled about the possibility of him coming back.

The prospect of pairing Garrett with Donald has generated significant excitement throughout the NFL. Both players have dominated opposing offenses during their careers, and together they could form one of the most dangerous defensive combinations the league has ever seen.

For Donald, the opportunity to play alongside a player of Garrett’s caliber could be an appealing reason to consider a return. For the Rams, adding Donald to a defense already strengthened by Garrett could significantly improve their chances of competing for another Super Bowl title.

While there is no indication that Aaron Donald has decided on his future, the possibility remains intriguing. As the offseason continues, Rams fans will be watching closely to see whether Garrett can help convince the future Hall of Famer to return to the field. If Donald does decide to come back, the already skyrocketing odds for the Rams to go all the way would blow up massively.

Myles Garrett has big, lofty goals to fulfill

Following an extraordinary 2025 campaign in which he set a new single-season record with 23 sacks, Garrett currently ranks 28th all-time with 135.5 sacks. And he has set his eyes on a new mission: The most revered milestone in Buffalo Bills history, Bruce Smith’s all-time NFL record of 200 career sacks.

Turning 31 this December, the veteran defender faces a steep but realistic trajectory to eclipse Smith’s legendary mark, aided by the modern 17-game regular-season schedule. Statistical projections indicate that Garrett’s path to the record depends heavily on his career longevity. If he plays until age 36, he must maintain an average of 12.5 sacks per season.

Extending his career to age 38 lowers the required threshold to 9.3 sacks per year. Given that Garrett has averaged 17 sacks over the past three seasons, maintaining this elite production for just two more years would put him within striking distance by 2028.

While Smith played until age 40 to set the benchmark, Garrett’s current efficiency suggests the historic 200-sack threshold is no longer insurmountable.
