Brandon Aiyuk’s standoff with the San Francisco 49ers continues. They are past the point of reconciliation. Aiyuk continues to miss practice and is unlikely to show up.

With trade most likely off the table, given Aiyuk’s salary and injury history, the veteran receiver is trying all the tricks so that the 49ers cut/release him from the team. The Niners are budging from their position.

According to ESPN, the Niners stand to take a hit of nearly $30 million in dead salary-cap money by releasing Aiyuk. It will also make him an unrestricted free agent. That’s what Aiyuk is hoping to achieve with his antics. Jarvis Landry sympathizes with Aiyuk’s situation, but he doesn’t see the 49ers agreeing to his demands.

Where I see [Brandon Aiyuk] at today, based on where I saw him two years ago, it’s not the same Brandon that I know. It’s not the same player, it’s not the same guy, not the same man that I respected for how he played the game, how he showed up for his teammates. Some people say, ” Any publicity is good publicity”.

Jarvis Landry said on a recent segment of the 4th & South podcast with Leonard Fournette

The way Aiyuk has chosen to handle the situation can’t be considered positive PR. Rather, it’s making him look like the bad guy, willing to throw the 49ers under the bus for not complying with his demands. Football organizations look for a team player, not someone who acts the way the 28-year-old has for a better part of eighteen months.

I just feel like as an organization, if I’m even looking or considering bringing a guy like [Brandon] Aiyuk in and I see the type of posts that he’s been posting, I don’t really know if you really want to even play football like that. I don’t know that I want to bring someone like that into my organization, into my locker room. You’re a veteran in the league at this point. You’re a leader when you walk into that locker room.

Aiyuk is not even trying to hide his intentions. His desire to play with Jayden Daniels on the Washington Commanders is an open secret. The two have had chemistry since their Arizona State days. Aiyuk advocated for playing with Daniels before the 49ers signed him to a four-year, $120 million contract extension in 2024.

Seven games into the new season, he suffered a season-ending ACL tear and underwent surgery. The following year, he refused to attend practice, earning a monetary penalty. He missed the entire 2025 season.

Landry played eight seasons in the league and faced his fair share of money and injury struggles. He admitted it was a difficult phase in his life. He managed to grind through it. But there have been cases where athletes have succumbed to the psychological pressure that comes with their jobs.

Landry urged the 49ers to reach out to Aiyuk to ensure he refrains from making any rash decisions.

Hopefully, call this man. Go put your arm around him. Teammates, former teammates, call this guy. And Brandon, if you’re watching the show, please, DM me, bro.
