The San Francisco 49ers drafted Jerry Rice 16th overall in 1985. He went on to play the same number of years with the NFC franchise. He won three Super Bowls with the Niners and later played for the Oakland Raiders (now the Las Vegas Raiders) and the Seattle Seahawks.
Rice appeared in a total of 303 career NFL games. He caught 1549 passes for 22,895 yards and scored 197 touchdowns, all three are NFL records.
With Rice’s legacy cementing him as the greatest receiver in NFL history, fans eager to follow today’s stars can check out the FanDuel NFL spreads for the upcoming season’s biggest matchups. Rice was a two-time NFL Offensive Player of the Year, 11-time All-Pro, 13-time Pro Bowls, twice the NFL’s reception leader, and 6 times led the league in receiving touchdowns. Rice was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2010 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006.
Rice’s son, Brendan Rice, played college football for the University of Colorado and later for the University of Southern California. The Los Angeles Chargers drafted Rice in the seventh round of the 2024 NFL Draft. In just a couple of years, Brendan Rice has been part of the New England Patriots, the Seattle Seahawks, the Las Vegas Raiders, and, in May 2026, signed with the Green Bay Packers.
Jerry Rice praised the 49ers for signing wide receiver Mike Evans
In 2023, the 49ers had several notable wide receivers on their team—Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings, Deebo Samuel, and Ray Ray McCloud. Two years later, none are present on the team, Aiyuk could leave as well.

The Niners didn’t wait too long to find a suitable replacement. They signed Super Bowl winner Mike Evans earlier in the year. Evans has earned two All-Pro and six Pro Bowl honors and equalled Jerry Rice’s record of eleven straight 1000-yard seasons in 2024.
Evans signed a three-year deal worth up to $42.4 million with the 49ers. Rice gave his honest opinion on the veteran wideout.
Jerry Rice said via NBCS
What a great leader. I had the opportunity to meet him, and he’s just such a good individual, and he works hard. The players are going to get the chance to probably see a Hall of Famer, and he’s going to work his butt off every day.
Rice instructed quarterback Brock Purdy to establish a connection with Evans and throw him the ball as much as possible.
Just throw it up because he has that big frame. He’s going to be able to go up and attack the football, so once you’re in the end zone, just throw that thing up like an alley-oop back in the day. Just throw it up and let him go get it, and he’s capable of doing it.
Rice said
In 176 games with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Evans caught 866 passes for 13,052 yards and scored 108 touchdowns.
Aside from Evans, the Niners have former first-round draft pick Ricky Pearsall ready for a breakout year. Pearsall has 67 receptions for 928 yards and 3 touchdowns in 20 games.
