Lane Kiffin managed Ole Miss from 2020 to 2025 before making his controversial offseason switch to LSU. On Saturday, Kiffin arrived at Oxford, Mississippi, with the Tigers for the Week 3 crunch game in the SEC.

According to the Clarion Ledger, the state of Mississippi assembled a team of 15 Louisiana State Police officers and 19 mounted patrol officers on horses (including units brought in from Mobile, Alabama) for the Ole Miss-LSU game. Additional law enforcement joined the patrol outside and inside the Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, for arguably one of the largest police presences for a college game in quite some time.

Sean Tindell, commissioner of the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, made it very clear that they did not want any mishap to occur before, during, and after the game.

Our priority is making sure everyone can enjoy the game and surrounding events safely. This enhanced presence is about being prepared, staying proactive and working together.

Sean Tindell said (H/T FOX Sports)

Clips posted by fans captured the atmosphere in and around the stadium, which could only be described as hostile. The LUS cavalry arrived surrounded by a horde of security.

Fans in red and blue filled the seats to welcome their former coach back. And it wasn’t with open arms, but rather with boos and disses. The entire stadium raged when troopers escorted Kiffin out of the tunnel.

Lane Kiffin’s old protégé humbles him on his return to Mississippi

When Kiffin moved from Ole Miss to LSU, more than 50, including staff and players, followed him to Baton Rouge. Kiffin also tried to lure quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, but he declined.

Chambliss started on Saturday and by the end of the first half, he had thrown for 240+ yards and 2 touchdowns. Ole Miss entered the halftime break with a 17-point lead.

After Kiffin failed to land Chambliss, he went for the No. 2 quarterback on his list, Sam Leavitt. Leavitt made his name at Arizona State and entered the transfer portal in the offseason. He joined LSU as the starter.

Leavitt chewed away at the Ole Miss lead despite a shaky start. His two touchdown passes helped the Tigers level the score in the final quarter.

However, Chambliss had the last laugh. He scrambled for a 14-yard score six minutes from time and then converted on the two-point try to set up a grandstand finish. The Rebels’ defense held on in the final moments to secure a 32-24 victory.

Heisman Trophy winner and former Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III captured the moment with a perfect tweet.

Lane Kiffin got beat by the team that he built and by the QB he recruited, and that wouldn’t go to LSU with him.

Chambliss finished with 33 completions for 363 yards and 3 total touchdowns. Ole Miss improved to 3-0 for the season, they defeated Louisville and Charlotte in their first two fixtures.

Kiffin suffered his first defeat as LSU coach. Ole Miss outgained them by almost 100 yards and had six additional first downs (25 to 19).

Chambliss played D2 football at Ferris State for three years before Kiffin brought him to the Rebels ahead of the 2025 season. Austin Simmons won the starter’s job, but it quickly became apparent that he lacked the experience and panache to play regularly.

Kiffin turned to Chambliss, and he made the position his. The Rebels qualified for the playoffs and won the Sugar Bowl against Georgia. Eventually, Miami knocked them out in the Fiesta Bowl.

Shortly after, Kiffin left for LSU. Chambliss stayed and fought for an extra year of eligibility. Chambliss has a passer rating of 155.9 with 4,861 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions in 18 games for Ole Miss. He has also scored 10 rushing touchdowns.
