Heading into the week, the Philadelphia Eagles’ CJ Gardner-Johnson appeared a bit overconfident as he bluntly trash-talked his opponents, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers only to end up in an ugly 33-16 loss. The safety became a subject of laughter since then, but what made things worse for him was seeing his teammate Darius Slay Jr. laughing at him with his rival Micah Parsons.
In the recent episode of Parsons’ podcast, The Edge, he couldn’t help but bring up the subject of Gardner-Johnson’s antics before the week 4 game. Without speaking anything in defense of his teammate, the Eagles’ cornerback responded with an odd laugh with the divisional rival.
Although the safety became a source of entertainment because of his ineffective trash talk, he at least expected his teammates to support him– or, at the very least, not make fun of him. But listening to the podcast left him utterly disappointed. Instead of defending himself, Gardner-Johnson shared an Instagram story to express his disappointment towards Slay Jr.
On a black backdrop, Gardner-Johnson wrote, “Damn….”
Although it’s not surprising to see the cornerback taking a jab at Gardner-Johnson, the fact that Slay Jr. joined in certainly shocked him. As a teammate, Slay Jr. was expected to stand by his safety, especially since he’s a locker room leader in Philadelphia.
Darius Slay Jr. laughs at CJ Gardner-Johnson’s trash-talking mistake
The Eagles’ safety had begun trash-talking his opponents before week 3, against the New Orleans Saints but that week, Philly succeeded with a close victory. His trash-talking about ‘bringing a belt’ backfired while facing Baker Mayfield’s Tampa Bay.
During Parsons’ podcast, he laughed at Gardner-Johnson for giving up a crucial touchdown on the opening drive, saying, “Your dog C.J.…he struck again.” To this, Slay Jr. trolled his teammate by saying that trash-talk needs to be backed up in the game.
Although Parsons tried to downplay the laughter by explaining that he doesn’t believe his rival doesn’t belong in the league, he simply views this as a humbling moment for the safety. However, the damage was already done as Slay Jr’s response to his teammate’s insult was quite loud.
