Draymond Green and Steve Kerr have achieved a lot of success during their time together in the Golden State Warriors. Green was drafted by the Warriors as the 35th overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft, while Kerr joined them as a head coach in 2014.

The two have formed a very strong relationship in the last 12 years. Green played a vital role during the Warriors’ dynasty run as a leader and a defensive presence with Kerr at the helm.

For all their success together, their relationship has been tested quite a few times as well. The former Defensive Player of the Year has landed himself in controversy quite a few times in his career. While Kerr has defended his star defender in public, it has not been easy for him either.

On a recent episode of his podcast, Green revealed that Kerr grew frustrated with his antics and showing support all the time.

My head coach, Steve Kerr, came up to me and he said, ‘Man, it’s become incredibly hard to support you publicly’. I said back to him, ‘Don’t. I’m fine. I don’t need you to support me publicly. I’ll be alright, I can handle the things that I’ve done to bring things upon myself. I can handle them; I deal with my own s–t.‘

Steve Kerr has always backed Green no matter the controversies surrounding him and has often labeled him as the greatest defensive player ever. But based on Green’s statements, it looks like the head coach reached a tipping point as well.

When the Warriors’ 2025-26 campaign came to an end, Kerr embraced Green and Stephen Curry, thinking it would be their last time together. However, Kerr returned after signing a two-year deal with the Warriors in the offseason.

Draymond Green and Steve Kerr have been through so much together

While Green and Kerr have been very supportive of each other, there have been times where their relationship took a bit of a hit. Earlier in the 2025-26 season, the two were seen having a fiery exchange during a timeout against the Orlando Magic.

Before things got any worse, Green went off to the locker room and did not return till the fourth quarter. The exchange was captured on cameras and went viral in no time. Green has landed himself in quite a few controversial moments in his career due to his questionable acts.

Despite the difficulty in handling a player like Green, Kerr has always reiterated his love for him. After all, they have won so much together. They have won four championships in six NBA Finals together since 2014.

Under Kerr, Green has been a central piece in the Warriors’ offense and defense. For a player with a limited skill set, Kerr has gotten the best out of Green, who has gone on to win a DPOY award and has been named to the All-Defensive Team nine times in his career.

Draymond Green and Stephen Curry barely talk in the summer

Kerr and Draymond Green have played vital roles during the Warriors’ dynasty run, but the biggest driving force of the Dubs has always been Stephen Curry. Under Kerr’s tutelage, Curry and Green have formed one of the most formidable duos in the NBA. They have a telepathic connection on the court and share a solid bond off of it as well.

With all the noise surrounding Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown‘s relationship, Green spoke about his own relationship with Curry.

I’ve been playing with Steph Curry for 14 years. Love Steph Curry to death. He’s my brother. Been to hell and back with him. We don’t hang out all the time off the basketball court. During the summertime, we don’t talk much at all. Every now and then I check in with him. Every now and then he’ll get a text. We don’t talk a bunch at all…Does that mean we don’t have a great relationship? Or does that mean our relationship is so close, once we pick back up, we won’t miss a beat?

A lot of reports have been coming out that Tatum and Brown were not on the best of terms off the court. While Tatum has dismissed those reports, the noise has only been growing louder as many believe Tatum did not stand up for Brown before his trade. However, as Green said, teammates need not be close to each other and hang out all the time during their breaks.
