James Vowles has been one of the many people that Christian Horner has had to look out for on the F1 grid for the past 10 years. With Mercedes being Redbull’s biggest rival ever since the turbo hybrid era, James has been one of the key assets that have led Mercedes to the success that they have garnered till date. However, James’s move to Williams isn’t very concerning for the Red Bull team boss.

A while ago, it was announced that Williams and their then team principal Jos Capito will be parting ways ahead of the 2023 F1 season. This led to F1 fans being absolutely clueless, as to who would be replacing him. However, no one could have expected James Vowles to be the place. after working at Mercedes for almost 20 years, the Brit parted ways with them to join Williams to become their new team principal.

Normally, when people switch teams in Formula 1, they need to serve a notice period before they are able to join another team. However, it does not seem to be the case with Williams‘s newest hire. It could possibly be due to the fact that Mercedes supplies engines to Williams which also has place for their Brackley based team’s junior drivers. Whatever agreement that they have got in place, doesn’t seem to be that big of a concern for Red Bull team principal Christian Horner.

In an interview with Motorsport Magzine, here is what the Red Bull team boss had to say. “I don’t know James particularly well, but he’s obviously a very capable guy,” he began. “Williams will have done their due diligence and research and I think it’s great that they’re giving him the chance to make that step up,” he continued while stating that the arrival of James Vowles at Williams is good news for the Grove based outfit.

The terms on which James Vowles was allowed to join Williams and leave Mercedes still remain a mystery to many. Christian Horner commented on that too. “Williams would have obviously done what’s right for them and right for their business. But only they will know what has been agreed for that early release to have happened,” he said.

James Vowles has worked hard and dedicated his life to motorsports and his promotion from being a strategic head to directly being a team principal is impressive. Fans of the sport are confident that he fully deserved this role. It will be interesting to see how James handles the troubling situation at Williams with respect to its performance in recent years.
