“At twenty-five you don’t know what it is to be thirty,” David Coulthard stays sceptical of Max Verstappen’s future in F1

“At twenty-five you don’t know what it is to be thirty,” David Coulthard stays sceptical of Max Verstappen’s future in F1

With two back-to-back World Championship victories to his name, it is safe to say that Max Verstappen is the new wonder boy of Formula 1. The Dutchman has managed to enter into the elite group of multiple F1 World title-holders at the yung age of only 25, and it is an indubious fact that many more massive achievements still await him. When Max had walked into F1 as a boy of 17, many of the pundits had recognised his talent and they believe he will only proceed to win more feats in the future–but one person is wary of what Max Verstappen is going to do in the next five years–and that is David Coulthard.

Retired British racer David Coulthard has seen Max Verstappen up close since he lives close to the Dutchman’s residence in Monaco. Having done many interviews with Max, Coulthard knows the potential that is present in the two-time World Champion. But despite all of it, he refuses to jump into any conclusions regarding where Max Verstappen might be headed in the next few years because, from his own experience, David Coulthard knows life as a Formula 1 racer is filled with cutthroat competition and uncertainties.

Thus, when every other F1 commentator and pundit wishes to drop in their predictions regarding Max Verstappen’s career, David Coulthard says he wishes to remain silent. Max himself has claimed several times that he loves racing, and would like to keep going at it even when he is above 30. F1 is mostly a young men’s sport as drivers usually retire after reaching their 30s, but there are some exceptions like Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton. But Coulthard does not know if Max Verstappen will be able to join Alonso and Hamilton when the time comes for him.

David Coulthard draws a parallel between Max Verstappen and James Hunt

Max Verstappen and David Coulthard

Max Verstappen is Formula 1’s most successful driver in the recent years, and his career has been a topic of discussion for most of the people in the paddocks. While giving his take on Max’s future in F1, David Coulthard said he sees the Dutchman follow James Hunt’s route and retire from the sport after a certain point. He said in an interview for Viaplay group’s Lion Unleashed 2 documentary, “I think that he could at a certain point go ‘actually you know what, I’m happy, I’m fulfilled,’ and go off and do something completely different.

In a nutshell, David Coulthard has his doubts regarding whether Max Verstappen will be able to keep going strong in Formula 1 once he hits his 30s despite the Dutchman claiming to do so. Only time will tell if Coulthard’s concerns prove to be correct and Max indeed walks away from Formula 1 after achieving some great feats to focus more on his personal life.
