The F1 world broke loose when it was announced that Lewis Hamilton would leave Mercedes to join Ferrari at the end of 2024. Multiple theories had originated on who would be taking the place of the seven-time champion at Brackley. Fernando Alonso, a common name reckoned to replace Hamilton has now spoken regarding the same.
Alonso stated his opinion on being related to the Mercedes camp following Hamilton’s departure. The two-time champion insisted on staying with Aston Martin if he wished to stay on the grid following the end of this year. However, the Spaniard has kept his gates open if a situation arises that he may want to look somewhere else.
My first priority will be always to sit down and discuss with Aston[Martin]. If we cannot reach an agreement, and I want to commit to race in F1... I'm probably attractive to other teams, the performance that they saw last year, the commitment. There are only three world champions on the grid. And there is only one available.Fernando Alonso said as reported by motorsport.com
The two-time champion would be on the target of Mercedes as he is one of the best drivers available for the 2025 season. Despite claiming that he doesn’t have any interest in driving for any other team, a seat at the Silver Arrows seems too good to be true to be left and not be considered by the Spaniard.
Who are the contenders for the Mercedes seat?
Hamilton is the most successful driver in the history of F1 statistically. The 39-year-old has amassed 103 race wins and 7 world titles in his 17-year-long career. Lewis Hamilton’s decision to leave Mercedes for Ferrari could make it difficult for the Silver Arrows. The Brackley-based team needs to find a suitable replacement for the seven-time world champion.
The obvious answer seems an outgoing Carlos Sainz who is left without a drive following the signing of the Briton at Ferrari. Sainz is a fast and clever driver who is thought an exciting talent on the grid. On the other hand, Alonso is also an option whose prime never seems to end.
Many young drivers are also an option like Mick Schumacher or Kimi Antonelli who makes his F2 debut this year. Who will be replacing an outgoing seven-time champion would be a question that the F1 world is keen on knowing. Mercedes would reveal its pick to replace Hamilton in the coming months.
