Fernando Alonso sends clear message to Max Verstappen with a cheeky on-stage stunt at Monaco GP
Fernando Alonso has claimed that he could have finished in the top spot at the Monaco GP, and he made a cheeky move to prove his point
It has been a long wait of more than a decade since Fernando Alonso had won his 32nd Grand Prix at his home race, the Spanish GP, in 2013. The Asturian was missing from Formula One for a few years as he could not find a suitable seat at any of the teams at the end of the 2018 season. But he made a splash by walking back into the sport, holding hands with the French outfit Alpine. While Alonso excelled during his time at Alpine with multiple top-5 finishes, he never had the car that could challenge the frontrunners for the World Championship.
But now, the tables have turned as Fernando Alonso has shifted to a new team at 41 following the retirement of Sebastian Vettel from F1. As the two-time World Champion took up Vettel’s seat at the Silverstone-based team, he declared his faith in Lawrence Stroll’s visions for making Aston Martin into one of the top teams. With the help of the powerful AMR23, Alonso has established himself as a regular on the F1 podium, having achieved five top-3 finishes in the six Grands Prix that have been held til now.
In Monaco, fans saw another side to Fernando Alonso that was long asleep, it seems. The Spaniard gave one of his best performances ever at the Qualifying on Saturday and was almost awarded the pole position if not for Max Verstappen’s last flying lap in Q3. During the Main Race as well, Fernando Alonso tailed Max in the second position for the major part of the time, and he ended his run at P2. But the man from Oviedo is convinced the Monaco GP race win would have been his if not for some minor mistakes. Thus, he made a cheeky, subtle move during the prize-giving ceremony, that sent a clear message to his adversaries as well as his fans.
Fernando Alonso’s Monaco GP performance is evidence enough that he is in it to win it
Alonso is currently in the third spot on the World Championship, behind the mighty Red Bulls. With consistent top-3-worthy performances at all the races till now, he has established himself as a favorite amongst the F1 pundits. Many of the fans and the F1 commentators have also claimed that this time, Fernando Alonso will surely win his elusive 33rd race title by the end of this season. While he seemed like he could win in Monaco, a tyre change error took away the opportunity.
But during the prize-giving ceremony, Fernando Alonso put his left foot on the top step of the podium, where Max Verstappen, the race winner, was standing. This cheeky stunt was enough for the fans to get that Alonso is indicating that the P1 position would be his in the next few races.
In other news, Fernando Alonso’s passion for flowers has made the headlines in F1 world in the last few days. The Asturian has openly admitted that he loved the floral bounty while they were in Miami, but he missed the flowers as there were none in Monaco. Max Verstappen took note of Nando’s floral obsession and offered him a job to look after the flowers at his apartment during their press conference ahead of the Monaco GP. Alonso said he would only take up on Max’s offer if the Dutchman does not get too aggressive during the race.
