Nyck De Vries is the newest rookie apart from Logan Sargent to enter the Formula 1 grid for the 2023 season. However, it’s fair to say that the Dutchman has a fair bit of experience racing single seaters. With three races done and dusted, Nyck is one of the only two remaining drivers on the grid that haven’t secured any points as of yet. Although that hasn’t stopped his ongoing efforts to get adjusted to the high stakes and intensity that the sport demands.
The Dutch driver got a taste of Formula 1 with Mercedes, Alpine, Williams and Aston Martin in a single season before AlphaTauri decided to finally give him his dream shot. Nyck De Vries had won the F2 championship in 2019 but wasn’t able to secure a seat in F1 despite his competitors managing to do so. However, he did not give up as he moved onto Formula E where he raced with Mercedes and became the world champion.
This had garnered a lot of attention from F1 teams over a possible future in the sport for the Dutch racing driver. However, his debut F1 appearance in a race with Williams finally sealed the deal. Having replaced Alex Albon for Monza, De Vries went on to score points for the team on his debut. This further led to him being signed by AlphaTauri to race alongside Yuki Tsunoda for the 2023 F1 season. F2 driver Richard Verschoor has defended the Dutchman over his recent draught.

Can Nyck De Vries overcome the pressure that comes with Formula 1?
In an interview with Ziggo’s Race Café, Richard Verschoor went on to talk about De Vries’s F1 debut so far. “You are thrown into the deep end,” he said. “It is also difficult for him. We have seen that he needed three years in Formula 3 and Formula 2 as well to do well. In Formula 1, that world is just a lot harder. I think he really has a few more races to prove himself. I do think he can do it, but he has to start doing it. He’s good enough, he’s just under a lot of pressure,” he concluded.
Nyck De Vries is an extremely experienced driver. Having won an F2 title and a FE title, it was pretty clear as to what was expected from him. With Nyck joining the team, Franz Tost wants him to take up the role of team leader in order to steer AlphaTauri on the path towards success. With just three races done and dusted, the Dutchman will need some time to adapt and succeed.
