“I will change the cards on the table”: Sergio Perez sends an early warning to Max Verstappen for the 2023 F1 season

With the Singapore Grand Prix round the corner, it is almost a given fact that Max Verstappen has succeeded in defending his F1 World Champion title this year, as he has an advantage of 144 points over his nearest rival Charles Leclerc and 153 points more than Sergio Perez. While five races would still be left in the roster once the Singapore GP gets over, there is a high chance Max Verstappen is declared the title-holder for this season at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.

It is a well-known fact that Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez was also hoping for a shot at winning the World Championship this year–but that is out of his reach now. Still, the Spaniard has not lost any hope as he has vowed to return to the tracks next year with a new zeal to grab the first spot in the WDC Standings. In a recent interview with Fox Sports Mexico, Checo made it clear that he “aspires to win the title again” in 2023 and that he knows he has got it in him to go for the victory.

Sergio Perez joined the Red Bull team in 2021, replacing Thai-British driver Alex Albon. Ever since his debut with the team, he has displayed incredible skills, and has been a good match for Max Verstappen. In his two years with Red Bull, he has won numerous podiums and even two Grand Prix victories in Azerbaijan (2021) and in Monaco (2022). And with those results to back him up, the Mexican racer knows he can aim for a World Title in the upcoming season.

Heading into the 17th round of this year’s Formula 1 Championship, Sergio Perez has got the confidence that he has shown the people at the Red Bull team that he is competent and capable of scoring podiums. Although Max Verstappen has got the lead in the points table in 2022, Sergio is already looking forward to putting up a better performance next year, so that he can be the one to break his teammate’s title-winning streak.

Speaking on his goals for 2023, Sergio Perez said, “It is important for me to finish the season strong and competitive and win races. Max will be the champion, so being second or third doesn’t matter to me so that in 2023 I can aspire to win the title again.

The Mexican racer, who is currently third in the line for the 2022 F1 drivers’ trophy with only 9 points less than Lecerc, believes he has made a huge improvement this year. He said, “It has been an important year because the team has seen that I can be as competitive as Max. We are analyzing it so that we are fighting for the title in 2023.”

Thus, indeed, the pressure is on for next year’s Championship win as all the top five racers in this year’s points table have said that they are looking forward to grabbing the title from Max Verstappen. Will the Dutchman be able to score a hat-trick with his World Championship title or will he lose it to one of his rivals–maybe his own teammate? That is to be seen.
