It is no news that Lando Norris has been impressing his fans ever since he joined the McLaren team back in 2019 after ending up as the second runner-up in the 2018 Formula 2 Championship. The young Briton proved his mettle and consistently scored top 10 finishes in almost all the races last year, and he has also managed to get 88 points so far in 2022, even with the unsatisfactory car setup that McLaren provided him with.
At a time when his teammate Daniel Ricciardo, an eight-time Grand Prix winner and a racer with double his experience, could not score any points in the races as he finished out of the top 10, Lando Norris showed all the F1 followers his talent and hard work behind the wheels. But there is one thing, totally unrelated to his driving, that has made Lando Norris quite the talk of the town–or, should we say–the talk of the F1 communities worldwide. And that is–Lando’s intriguing name.
When the racer first rose to prominence in the motorsport world, people wondered if Lando’s name had anything to do with a character from Star Wars–the rebel called Lando. Fans of Formula 1, who used to be Star Wars nerds in their childhoods, got all excited to find out the source of Lando’s ingenious name. But then, the racer confirmed in one of his interviews that his name has got nothing to do with the popular comic series.
What led Lando Norris’s parents to come up with such an interesting name?
Lando Norris has a family with mixed ancestry. Although the Norrises are primarily based in England, Lando is Belgian on his mother’s side. Now, many fans believed Lando’s parents are Star Wars fans who wants to name their son after Star Wars rebel Lando Calrissian, but to their disappointment, that is not the case. Lando himself confirmed that his “mum” had just prefered the moniker and wanted to go with it.
While many believe Lando does resemble the Star Wars character even if he was not named after him, the British racer said, “It has got nothing to do with Star Wars. My mum just came up with it and she doesn’t have a clue what Star Wars is. So it’s definitely not from Star Wars.” Despite the official comment on this from Lando Norris, fans still believe his bountiful energy, jovial nature and friendly ways resemble the Lando from Star Wars.
