Lewis Hamilton brewed up a storm in his fanbase, and indeed, between Formula 1 fans in general when he announced that he and Angela Cullen would no longer work together. The two first began to work together in F1 back at the 2016 Australian Grand Prix. After (exactly) 7 years, this partnership came to an end. The exact reasons are rather unclear, though there are some hints.

Cullen served as the seven-time world champion’s physiotherapist, confidante, and one of his closest allies in the paddock. The two wrote ‘farewell’ messages for each other on Instagram, which do provide at least some clues. A line in Hamilton’s statement read: “So today I hope you’ll join me in wishing her the very best as she takes her next steps to pursue her dreams.” In Cullen’s message, there was a sentence: “Today I’m excited to share I’m off on my next adventure.”

So, from these words, it seems as if Cullen ‘left’ her role to pursue something else. Now, the Mercedes driver has discussed his relationship with her following the departure, and from what he’s said, it does not seem there is any bad blood or rift between the pair of them. As per The Mirror, he said: “Angela and I are good. She’s in a different phase of her life, we’re still super close.”

Confirming that the relationship between him and his former physiotherapist is still close, Hamilton added: “We keep texting every day, massively supportive and I’m massively supportive of her, so grateful to have had her with me on this journey. She’s one of my closest friends and continues to be.” However, it seems as if it might have been his call to stop working with Cullen.

Toto Wolff’s words provide insight into the Lewis Hamilton-Angela Cullen split

So, it seems all is well between the two of them, and from the “different phase of her life” comment, it seems it was a mutual decision. But from an interview given by Toto Wolff, it looked as if it was Lewis Hamilton’s decision to stop working with Angela Cullen. The Austrian said as per Motorsport.com: “We develop as an organisation and if things don’t work out anymore, then we need to be honest about it and then bring change.”

The Mercedes’ team principal added: “Angela will always be a mascot of the team. She’s the only one who has a louder voice than a starting car! But, if this is what [Hamilton] decides, we will always absolutely support him, whatever direction he wants to take.” in a separate interview, he also said that choosing his physio/close circle members (or replacing Cullen) is purely Hamilton’s decision, and Mercedes are not involved in it.

So, while it seems plain that Hamilton and Cullen are on good terms, it is still somewhat unclear as to who made the decision to stop working with the other, or whether it was a mutual thing. But Wolff’s words suggest that it was the seven-time world champion who decided to stop working with Cullen.
