Max Verstappen is one of the hottest talents in Formula One right now. Having won the 2021 driver’s championship, the Dutchman has quite possibly started his era of dominance. The Red Bull hotshot displayed an exhilarating performance in the 2022 F1 season where he broke many records. This includes the one for most race wins in a season.

For his outstanding achievements in the pinnacle of motorsport, Max Verstappen has been nominated for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award for the second year running. The Red Bull driver won the award last year for his impeccable performance in the 2021 season where he beat 7 time world champion Lewis Hamilton. However, he has some tough competition for this year’s iteration.

Along with Max Verstappen, the nominees for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award include Argentine football legend Lionel Messi. The legendary footballer led his country to win the FIFA World Cup in 2022. Apart from that, French footballer Kylian Mbappé is also on the list of possible winners of the award. It is without a doubt that it will be a tough to choose which athlete deserves the honour.

Here is what he had to say on Verstappen.com. “It’s an honour to be nominated for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award. Winning last year was an incredible moment for me: it is such a prestigious accolade, and it means even more when you’re up against the world’s best athletes,” the Dutch driver said as he reminisced last year’s iteration.

“To be shortlisted again is an achievement in itself, so thank you to my team Oracle Red Bull Racing for the support throughout our Championship winning year and thank you to the world’s media for nominating me. It’s great to see that the team where also nominated for a Laureus Team of the Year award, something they definitely deserve,” he concluded.

With pre season testing getting underway this week, it will be interesting to see how prepared Max Verstappen is. The Dutchman along with Sergio Perez will be keen on getting the most laps in. This will help them ahead of the season opening F1 weekend in Bahrain on 5th March. All eyes are on the Red Bull duo as they aim to retain their constructors championship.
