“The team is completely built around him,” Sergio Perez’s manager says why Verstappen has an advantage over him and why he should be careful
Mexican racer Sergio Perez never thought luck would shine on him in the most incredible way. For, he had no answer to the journalists who kept asking him which team he was going to at the end of the 2020 F1 season as his contract with Racing Point was almost over. But then, he got a call from Red Bull for replacing their Thai-British recruit Alex Albon as Max Verstappen’s teammate at the Austrian outfit. Perez jumped at that opportunity. The rest, as they say, is history. Since then, two years have passed. In the 2021 and 2022 seasons, Sergio Perez has proved himself to be important for Max Verstappen‘s back-to-back World Championship titles.
At Red Bull, Sergio Perez has given his best in the role for which he was recruited by team executives Dr. Helmut Marko and Christian Horner. He became the perfect teammate to Verstappen, defending Red Bull’s World Championship hope valiantly against a charging Lewis Hamilton at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. To the fans of Sergio Perez, it seemed the driver was safe with his seat at Red Bull. The Austrian team then sprang a surprise by hiring Daniel Ricciardo as their third driver.
Some of the F1 pundits believe Daniel Ricciardo has been brought in as a potential replacement for Sergio Perez in the future, in case the Mexican fails to impress Red Bull. Former racer and his own manager, Adrian Fernandez, also believes that Sergio Perez must be very careful in measuring his steps if he is to do well in winning the World Championship. He is already 32, as mentioned in some previous interviews.

Sergio Perez’s manager Adrian Fernandez refuses to believes the Mexican is underperforming
Adrian Fernandez himself has spent some years in IndyCar, so he knows when a racer is not able to put in his best efforts. The former racer, who has seen Sergio Perez up close and personal, does not think he is underperforming in any capacity. He said, “Checo is performing well. The problem is just that Verstappen is driving next to him. Max has obviously been driving for Red Bull for a bit longer and the team is completely built around him.”
As Max Verstappen has a clear upper hand on Sergio Perez at Red Bull, Adrian Fernandez believes the Mexican must be very methodical in his approach towards the World Championship. Added to that, there is the threat of Daniel Ricciardo breathing down Perez’s neck, waiting to take his seat. Hence, tough challenges lie ahead of Sergio Perez that only a driver of his skill, experience and caliber can take up.
