“They can steal more points off Ferrari”: Max Verstappen happy to see Mercedes catch up with Ferrari for Red Bull’s sake

While reigning World Champion Max Verstappen is currently enjoying a virtually undefeatable lead in the Formula 1 points battle, the Dutchman is surely enjoying his view at the battle between Mercedes and Ferrari for the second position in the Constructors’ Championship standings, as his own team, Red Bull, is leading with 431 points. While the audience surely enjoy a heated battle between two tough competitors, the F1 racers and their Team Principals want a peaceful win without any controversies, and they would also like a victory that does not drag to the very end of the season, as was the case last year.

A few weeks ago, Christian Horner admitted that he is relieved to see Ferrari troubled with their strategy and car performance as he would like an easy win this time. Taking his example, Max Verstappen has also recently commented that he is quite enjoying the fact that Mercedes are bridging the gap between them and Ferrari by gaining back their form in the recent races, as it means Red Bull will be rid of Ferrari’s threat in the Championship table.

As thirteen races have already been held in this season, and only 9 are left, Red Bull has a lead of nearly 100 points over Ferrari but the Scuderia are only 30 points ahead of Mercedes. At this point, even though Mercedes will not be able to catch up with Red Bull, they can very well go past Ferrari, and that is exactly what Red Bull needs. Thus, even though Lewis Hamilton and his Mercedes team gave Red Bull a lot of fierce competition last year, Max Verstappen is happy to see them regain their form in 2022 as this means they will keep Ferrari occupied in the battle for the second place while Red Bull will have a smooth victory.

Speaking of his happiness for the Silver Arrows finally making some progress in this season of F1, Red Bull racer Max Verstappen said, “It’s a good that they are competitive because then they can steal more points off Ferrari. So I’m very happy. They’re doing very well.”

Only a few days ago, Lewis Hamilton was asked about his hopes for winning a race in this season and bringing home the Grand Prix victory that Mercedes has been missing out on, throughout this season. The 37-year-old F1 veteran answered that with, “I hope so. That’s what we’re working towards. I think today there was potential for… I think this weekend, there was a potential for a win.” Lewis, of course, was talking about Mercedes’ first double podium in 2022 in the last race before summer break, at Hungaroring.
