The dominance and consistency that Red Bull has shown in recent years is nothing short of extraordinary. Red Bull, so far, has won all the races in the 2023 season and has had at least one driver on the podium. Max Verstappen, being the dominant force so far, has won 4 races out of the 6. The Dutchman now has a healthy 39-point lead over his teammate Sergio Perez who was said to be his potential title rival.

This Red Bull dominance has started a debate on whether Formula One needs to hold back the team. When Mercedes’ team principal Toto Wolff was asked about this, he called F1 a “meritocracy.” “Obviously, a strong fight between 10 drivers or at least two, is much better for all of us but it is not happening, that is why you have to just accept that and work to get back there,” he further stated.

However, these comments contradict Lewis Hamilton’s opinion, where he previously asked for rule changes in F1 to increase competitiveness in the sport. Toto Wolff further praised Max Verstappen’s recent commanding victory in Monaco. “The car is fast in all conditions, the driver is at the top of his game, even on Sunday going off at times, but to not DNF is a skill. You can see that he pushed, so all credit to them,” said the Austrian.

Instead of curtailing Red Bull’s performance, Wolff suggests F1 introduce mid-season advantages to the other teams. This could potentially boost-up the competitiveness of the other teams and make F1 racing more exciting.

Mercedes believe Barcelona would be a better circuit to test the upgraded W14

All eyes were on Mercedes during the Monaco Grand Prix, as the team dropped their zero-pod design and decided to use side-pods just like other teams. After a race that saw rain showers mid-way through, Lewis Hamilton and teammate George Russel finished P4 and P5, respectively. It was a decent result overall, but Monaco isn’t the ideal track to test new upgrades and see the true potential of the car.

Team principal Toto Wolff suggests that Barcelona would be a better testing ground to see the difference in the car’s performance. “Monaco is low-speed and downforce and you don’t see that on many other tracks. We are coming to more mid- and high-speed corners, a proper racetrack so it should be good,” he concluded.

Mercedes, so far in the season, has not produced overly impressive results, with only 3rd place finish to Lewis Hamilton’s name at the Australian Grand Prix. Toto Wolff will look to optimize the performance of the W14 and hope for better results at the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend.
