In his debut season in Formula One, Lewis Hamilton claimed his first-ever victory at the 2007 Canadian Grand Prix. In only his 6th start of his F1 career, Hamilton stood on the podium’s top step with McLaren. However, the 2007 race in Montreal is also remembered because of the terrifying crash endured by Robert Kubica.
Optimizing his chances on race day, Lewis Hamilton qualified in the pole position ahead of his teammate Fernando Alonso. Hamilton dominated the race from the start, as he kept ahead of his teammate on turns one and turn 2. With Alonso in pursuit of his third consecutive world title might have expected his teammate to yield his position. The two McLaren drivers were battling it out before the Spaniard went on the grass and dropped down the order.
However, before celebrations could begin in Hamilton’s side of the garage, Polish driver Robert Kubica had a dramatic crash against a concrete wall. This resulted in a safety car, which Hamilton skilfully tackled. Lewis Hamilton ultimately took the chequered flag 4 seconds ahead of P2 finisher Nick Heidfeld in the BMW. The podium was completed by Williams driver Alexander Wurz who claimed a P3 finish. Hamilton now has a record seven world titles and is statistically the best driver F1 has ever produced.
Robert Kubica’s death-defying crash at the 2007 Canadian Grand Prix

The 2007 Canadian GP went down in history as the first of a record 103 wins for Lewis Hamilton. However, its also remembered for a frightening crash involving the then-BMW driver Robert Kubica. The incident was certainly not for the faint-hearted
Kubica after starting P8, hit the back of Jarna Trulli’s Toyota. The initial impact of the crash led to Kubica’s BMW losing three wheels, and the nose, and incurring major damage to the sidepods. The car then flipped on its back across the race track and rested against a barrier on its side. This crash left Kubica’s feet exposed through the nose of the car.
The accident did seem scary, but Robert walked out of the crash with only a sprained ankle and a concussion. Later it was discovered that he went through a G-force of 75G during his crash. However, redemption was seen at the same race a year later, where Kubica managed to win the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix with BMW-Sauber.
