“I see selfish players,” Antonio Conte goes into complete rant mode on Tottenham players after 3-3 draw against Southampton

Tottenham Hotspur have only won one match in their last five games

“I see selfish players,” Antonio Conte goes into complete rant mode on Tottenham players after 3-3 draw against Southampton

Antonio Conte attacked Tottenham Hotspur’s history after they conceded a late equalizer to Southampton in a 3-3 draw. Spurs are in danger of falling out of a Champions League spot, with Newcastle United and Manchester United having two games in hand.

Conte attacked the history and the club’s ownership, saying, “They are used to it here. [They] don’t play for something important, yeah. They don’t want to play under pressure, don’t want to play under stress. It is easy in this way. The Tottenham story is this for 20 years. There is the owner, but they never won something. Why?

The Italian was highly disappointed with the club’s position at this stage of the season. He said: “Now there are ten games to go, and someone thinks we can fight with this attitude, with this spirit, for what, the seventh, eighth place? What? I am not used to fighting for this. It’s everyone’s responsibility.

Antonio Conte also attacked his players, leaving no hiding room. “We are not a team. We are 11 players that go into the pitch. I see selfish players, players that don’t want to help each other and don’t put their heart. The club has the responsibility for the transfer market; the coach has the responsibility. But the players, where are the players? I see only 11 players that play for themselves.” He also called the performance “unacceptable”  and claimed the players were worse than last season.

Tottenham dropped points due to a controversial 93rd-minute penalty by James Ward-Prowse. The Lilywhites looked to be cruising at 3-1 before losing control of the game and conceding multiple chances, and they eventually paid the price.

Tottenham scored the opening goal late in the first half. Son Hueng-min provided a lovely ball to Pedro Porro, who took a touch and smashed it in off the crossbar. It was his first goal for the club.

Southampton got the equalizer just a minute into the second half after Che Adams finished a low cross from Theo Walcott. Spurs retook the lead via Harry Kane, who headed home after an inch-perfect ball from Dejan Kulusevski. They looked to have killed the game off in the 74th minute as Perisic scored his first Tottenham goal with a half-volley into the net.

Ainsley Maitalnd-Niles got the home crowd going with a 25-strike, which went narrowly over the bar. Walcott got his second a minute later with a tap-in after a header across the goal from Sekou Mara. The hosts then grabbed a late equalizer when Pape Matar Sarr was adjudged to have caught Ashley Maitland-Niles rather than the ball. James Ward-Prowse smashed the spot kick past the outstretched Forster to salvage a draw. Manager Antonio Conte was visibly frustrated after the full-time whistle.

It is a massive result for 20th-placed Southampton, who will take any points they can get. Antonio Conte’s men a lot to worry about, with Newcastle only two points behind, with two games in hand, and in good spirits after a late Isak winner last night. Manchester United will feel more comfortable about their position, being one point clear of Tottenham with two games in hand.
