On Tuesday, the golf world found themselves staring at a major development as the PGA Tour dropped the huge announcement regarding the merge with LIV. This shocking turn of events came out of almost nowhere. The historic handshake between the two tours has faced a lot of criticism from fans and players who were kept in the dark. Rory McIlroy was one of those players who had no clue about this.

The Northern Irishman has been one of the most loyal players to PGA. Ever since the establishment of the LIV league, he has continued to shame them with words and declined to join them. However, Commissioner Jay Monahan’s decision to exclude him from the talks of the merger has raised a few eyebrows. He hoped that the players who left for LIV should not go unpunished.

With the RBC Canadian Open set to be underway this week, McIlroy in his press conference admitted that he was shocked with the sudden news. He had previously worked with Monahan behind the scenes to improve the quality of PGA Tour. “There still has to be consequences to actions,” McIlroy added while speaking to the media.

The people who left the PGA Tour irreparably harmed this tour. We can’t just welcome them back in,” he further stated. He was referring to the memo released by Monahan. The commissioner informed that the LIV players will be given a chance to return to tours after a formal process has been decided.

To say this sudden news has taken everyone involved by surprise would be an understatement. This announcement has sent shocks throughout the entire golfing universe. Speaking about these interesting circumstances, Rory McIlroy claimed that he felt like a “sacrificial lamb”. He does have his reasons though.

He along with golf great Tiger Woods had continued to fight the LIV league. The duo kept on declining offers from the Saudi-backed league and stayed loyal to PGA. The 34-year-old mentioned that it is hard for him to not feel like being used as a “sacrificial lamb“. He had become a towering figure in slamming the rival league. Talking about the merger he added that all he wants it “to protect the future of the PGA Tour”.

Since the news broke out, fans have shown their support for McIlroy and Woods for repeatedly defending the tour. Monahan also addressed the issue regarding the exclusion of them from this huge meeting. The commissioner added that both McIlroy and Woods will be rewarded for their loyalty towards the PGA.

While this merger talk has certainly shaken down the foundation of golf, the events will continue to be played as per the schedule till the end of the tour. McIlroy now has to turn his attention away from this and focus on the RBC Canadian Open. He will enter the tournament as a two-time defending champion and will have his sights set on a three-peat.
