‘The John Cena Classic’ is poised to be a breath of fresh air in the existing WWE product that has remained stale for a good portion of the past two years. It’s the brainchild of John Cena, and he made it public at his most recent WWE appearance at Backlash in Tampa.

Cena put emphasis on an unprecedented fan-voting system that’ll crown the champion of the John Cena Classic. A section of fans has since raised an argument regarding winning and losing matches not mattering if that’s going to be the case. The said criticism was taken up by the man of the hour himself.

‘The Cenation Leader’ got asked about it in a new interview with Shakiel Mahjouri of Shak Wrestling. ‘The Franchise Player’ explained that it’s more about stealing the show and being recognized for it even if their booking doesn’t lead to a certain wrestler winning their respective match on that night.

Every superstar that’ll compete will be eligible to be voted as the champion regardless of whether they win or lose. John Cena admitted that the discourse around winning and losing taking a backseat in all of this is quite valid, and he’s open to feedback. The 49-year-old revealed that they’ve yet to figure out how the fan voting will actually work.

There are obvious concerns about it succumbing to severe regulation from WWE to keep the mechanism from getting off the rails. Cena made it clear in the aforementioned conversation that NXT stars will take on main roster talent in exhibition matches, which he called the standalone part of the event.

The same happened on the night of his final match in WWE last December, where names like Oba Femi, Je’Von Evans, and Sol Ruca were given the opportunity to hold their ground against the tippy-top of WWE. ‘Mr. Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect’ said he did expect a bunch of questions directed at him about the John Cena Classic. He added that he’s trying something new with WWE, which he knew would receive its share of praise and critique.

Adjudging himself as one of the most polarizing figures in WWE in the past two decades, he stressed it wouldn’t have felt normal if there wasn’t a division of opinions in his nascent-yet-promising venture with WWE. Cena recently stated in a social media post that he’s unfazed by the prospect of the John Cena Classic totally failing, and he’s willing to take that risk, which he believes would be worth giving a try.

John Cena reviews the aging roster problem in WWE

One of the many criticisms about today’s WWE is about its main event scene skewing a bit older for a long time now. In a concerning stat, the company hasn’t had a male world champion under 30 years of age in almost a decade. The last time it happened was in February 2017 when the late Bray Wyatt won his first world title in the company at 29.

The fans have been longing for the injection of younger talent in those spots, and it’s not like WWE doesn’t have the talent to back it up. John Cena, who has himself won a record-setting 17 world titles in WWE, was asked about this problem in the aforementioned interview.

Taking himself into account alongside his 2002 OVW class batchmates Dave Bautista, Brock Lesnar, and Randy Orton, Cena affirmed that they had an anomaly of longevity and success in their respective careers, which took up time and spots. With three-fourths of them now retired and Orton being the only active wrestler out there, it’d automatically call for more young cats to fill in those shoes.

But the younger generation will need to prove their mettle against the currently available seasoned veterans of the company, who happen to be slightly older in scale. John Cena didn’t think that the possibility of a young world champion in WWE in the near future is totally dead.

Speaking of which, Oba Femi, 28, has the strongest case for becoming a world champion this year. He’s already rumored for a big-time showdown with Roman Reigns somewhere down the road.
