Jim Furyk will once again lead Team USA at the Ryder Cup. On Friday, the PGA of America officially named the 55-year-old as the US Ryder Cup captain for the 2027 edition. European captain Luke Donald later shared a classy message.

The Americans were left disappointed at the Ryder Cup once again in 2025. Under the captaincy of Keegan Bradley at the Bethpage Black Course in New York, the Europeans once again dominated their opponents and took a huge lead after the end of play on Saturday.

Team USA did fight back a bit in the singles action on Sunday. Despite earning 8.5 points on the final day, they were unable to avoid defeat as Europe went back-to-back with a 15-13 score in their favor.

Following the loss, the name of Tiger Woods as a potential captain came up once again. The golfer, however, turned it down and has since taken a break from the sport following his recent DUI arrest and car crash.

On Friday, reports emerged that Furyk was going to be named as the next USA captain. This did not sit well with fans on social media, as many questioned the decision to bring him back. Hours after the report came out, he was officially named as the captain.

Donald, the European captain, reacted to this development. In a comment under the official Ryder Cup USA post, the former World No.1 congratulated the veteran golfer for this and claimed he was looking forward to battling him.

Congratulations Jim. Diane and I look forward to sharing this special experience together with you and Tabitha over the next 17 months.

Luke Donald said regarding Jim Furyk

This will be the second time Furyk will captain Team at the Ryder Cup. He first took this role in 2018 as his side traveled to Paris, France. The Europeans had the upper hand once again and defeated their opponents 17.5-10.5 at Le Golf National.

Before Furyk, only 3 people had captained Team USA more than once. They were Jack Nicklaus (1983, 1987), Tom Watson (1993, 2014), and Davis Love III (2012, 2016).

Meanwhile, the 2027 edition will be Donald’s third successive stint as the European Ryder Cup captain. After the Englishman replaced Henrik Stenson as the captain, he led his team to victories in 2023 and 2025. A victory at Adare Manor in Ireland in 2027 would complete a three-peat for him.

Jim Furyk grateful for second opportunity as USA Ryder Cup captain

Jim Furyk will get a chance for redemption at the Ryder Cup after being named the captain for the 2027 event. He expressed his gratitude to the PGA of America for this opportunity.

Furyk was criticized heavily for his captaincy in 2018. Four of his picks went 2-10-0 that week. On top of that, Patrick Reed, who was the reigning Masters champion at that time, criticized Jordan Spieth for not wanting to play for him. He even aimed at Furyk for benching him twice.

Reed, who left LIV Golf this year and has been in fine form, could be one of the players competing in the 2027 edition. While there is still a long way to go to decide who will play and who will sit out, Furyk is looking forward to this chance once again.

The opportunity to captain the U.S. Ryder Cup Team for a second time is a tremendous honor. I am deeply grateful to the PGA of America Ryder Cup Committee for entrusting me to lead our team into the 46th Ryder Cup.

Jim Furyk said in his statement

What is Jim Furyk’s record at the Ryder Cup?

Jim Furyk will return as the Ryder Cup captain in 2027. This will mark yet another appearance in this biennial event for the 2003 U.S. Open winner.

Furyk played in 9 successive Ryder Cups from 1997 to 2014. This ranks him second in the all-time Ryder Cup appearances in USA history. His 34 matches are tied for the third most of any US player.

However, his record does not have a very good reading. In 34 matches, he won just 10 of them and ended up as the loser 20 times, leaving him with a 10-2-4 record.

During his 9 appearances, the USA only won twice and lost 7 times. The 17-time PGA Tour winner has represented his country as the vice captain on 4 occasions.

While the odds are against him, Furyk did lead the USA to victory at the 2024 Presidents Cup while serving as the captain. The event did feature some of the big names in American golf, including World No.1 Scottie Scheffler.

So he does have experience to lead a talented roster. It will thus be interesting to see how things pan out for him and Team USA.
