- Mirra Andreeva reached the final of the Madrid Open after defeating Hailey Baptiste in the semi-finals.
- She celebrated her 19th birthday with a small gathering and received a cake from the tournament organizers.
- Andreeva is also competing in the doubles category, aiming for a unique achievement alongside partner Victoria Mboko.
Mirra Andreeva has now been dubbed the 2026 clay queen, even though the French Open is yet to be played. Following her title win in Linz and a semi-final in Stuttgart, she has made it to the final of the Madrid Open, being the only top 10 player to survive the upsets that swallowed other players since the third round.
Iga Swiatek, Victoria Mboko, and Jessica Pegula were amongst the first top 10 players to exit the Madrid Open. Coco Gauff followed suit in the fourth round after struggling with illness. Aryna Sabalenka suffered an upset in the quarter-finals of the tournament as the defending champion after losing to Hailey Baptiste.
The Russian star was the least-favored to reach the Madrid Open final among other players. The Russian star had struggled in big tournaments this season, including the Dubai Tennis Championships and the Indian Wells, which she won this season. But she has showcased her class at the Madrid Open.
Andreeva defeated Sabalenka’s conqueror, Baptiste, in the semi-finals on Thursday (April 30). She won the first set easily, but Baptiste reacted in the second, leveling up at 5-5 as Andreeva was attempting to serve it out. A tiebreak emerged where Baptiste failed to convert three set points. That relieved Andreeva of much pressure and she claimed the win 6-4, 7-6(8).
Andreeva turned 19 years old on Wednesday (April 29), just a day after beating Leylah Fernandez in the quarter-finals. The Russian teenager had a little celebration, and the Madrid Open organizers gifted her a cake. Speaking at her post-match press conference, Andreeva explained how she celebrated it:
We kind of did a little celebration yesterday at the restaurant, but I really couldn’t allow myself to even drink a soda! I was drinking sparkling water, and I ate a little bit of cake, but I think we will have a bigger celebration a little bit later, maybe after Rome or before Rome. I will get my celebration, but maybe a little bit later. I really wasn’t expecting that gift. My agent was really thoughtful and he got me a pair of high heels.
At the start of the season, Andreeva was criticized by former players from her country about her lack of growth on tour. Despite winning two titles already this season, they complained that she’s only doing so at WTA 250 and 500 events. She has the opportunity to shut her critics by winning the Madrid Open.
Mirra Andreeva is seeking to win the singles and doubles at the Madrid Open
Mirra Andreeva is seeking to make a peculiar history at the Madrid Open. While she has already cemented her place in the final of the singles competition, she’s also in the doubles category. Alongside fellow teenager Victoria Mboko in the doubles, they are yet to drop a set at the tournament.

They knocked out the No.3 seeds of Elise Mertens and Shuai Zhang en route to the semi-finals. They will face former World No.2 Vera Zvonareva and Laura Siegemund for a place in the final of the doubles. During the aforementioned press conference, Andreeva revealed that the doubles help her forget the pressure of playing in the singles:
I love playing doubles, and I’m having so much fun all the time when I step on the court, we’ve won a couple of tournaments, we have amazing results together and obviously a lot of fun on the court as well. I feel like now, it’s helping me to just forget about that pressure when I play singles, and really just enjoy and have fun in doubles, but when things are getting competitive.
Andreeva will face Marta Kostyuk in the final of the Madrid Open on Saturday (May 2) at the Caja Magica. Both players have won a clay title entering the tournament and are in the best form of their careers. They are also seen as almost equals going into the tie, but Andreeva remains the favorite to win the title.
