“Guess you guys like drivers that run 20th,” NASCAR Twitter reacts to Aric Almirola signing a new multi-year contract with SHR, scrapping retirement plans
Aric Almirola
Aric Almirola declared at the beginning of 2022 that he wouldn’t be driving full-time in the cup series from 2023 because he wanted to spend more time with his wife and children. This news disappointed many of his supporters. Even though the seasoned driver has yet to claim a victory, his Top 20 finishes made him one of the most reliable competitors this season.
After finding a new work/life balance in the cup series, the three-time Cup race winner has now inked a multiyear contract with Stewart Hass Racing that will keep him driving for the Ford squad into 2023. The announcement, which was made recently, was also made because of his sponsors and the SHR team’s desire to get him to sign the contract.
The veteran is the fifth different driver this month to extend the contract with their team, as, alongside him, Joey Logano, Ryan Blaney, Bubba Wallace, and Daniel Suarez all had inked contract extensions with their respective teams. As the veteran is just one victory away from playoff eligibility, which he can do this weekend at Daytona, which he already has won before the race weekend at Daytona will surely be one of the most competitive ones of 2022.

The fans had a mixed reaction to the veteran coming out of a retirement plan to sign a multiyear contract as while some agreed with the decision; some were less convinced as they wanted Kyle Busch, who is in an awkward contract situation, to move to SHR. There were also comments trolling that Almirola usually finishes in the bottom top 20’s and genuine surprise from fans regarding the unexpected announcement.
Do you think SHR did wrong by giving the veterans a multi-year contract than a short-term one?
