Nelly Korda achieved one of her childhood dreams on Sunday as she won the U.S. Women’s Open. The American international captured her 4th major title in a dramatic finish at Riviera Country Club. Following her win, she revealed receiving encouraging texts from Tiger Woods.

Korda, the World No.1, did not have the best of starts to this tournament. 2 birdies and 3 bogeys in the opening round saw her post a score of 73, leaving her outside the top 50.

She bounced back in Round 2 and went low on Friday. With 5 birdies and 1 bogey, she fired a round of 67 and moved up a bit in the rankings. She followed this up with another round of 67 on Saturday.

On Sunday, she found herself battling against Charley Hull, In Gee Chun, Sei Young Kim, and Gaby Lopez. After birdies on the 1st and 6th holes, she bogeyed the 7th hole and shot 34 on the front nine.

On the back nine, she made 7 successive pars before making an important birdie on the 17th hole. This saw her take a 1-shot lead before heading to the par-4 18th hole.

With a close-range putt, Korda almost lipped out at the end. Fortunately for her, the ball rolled at the edge of the cup and went in, giving her the win.

This dramatic win secured Korda’s second straight major triumph. In late April, she went wire-to-wire at the Chevron Championship to claim her 3rd major honor.

While speaking with Golf Channel, the 27-year-old revealed that she had received texts from Tiger Woods. The 15-time major champion encouraged her to get the job done before the final round.

Tiger (Woods) texted me a couple times and told me to finish it off today.

The Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, California, has a special connection with Woods. It annually hosts the Genesis Invitational, a tournament where Woods serves as the host.
