After Brendan Sorsby applied for the NFL’s Supplemental Draft this year, many analysts started to place him as a potential steal for teams. They felt he had first-round potential, which means any QB-needy teams would be right to select him.

Those analysts pegged the Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers, and other teams as potential destinations for the 22-year-old.

Be it the mainstream media, podcasters, or beat writers, quite a few people were discussing the Texas native. But they did not talk about the one thing that made Sorsby a matter of national interest. Now, the NFL has decided to address it.

NFL is declining to hold a supplemental draft this summer, currently leaving the 2027 Draft as the only way for QB Brendan Sorsby to enter the NFL. A letter is being sent to Sorsby, and to all 32 NFL teams, to inform them of the league’s decision. The league continues to try to show it has little tolerance for gambling issues.

This means that the league has taken a stand on Brendan Sorsby’s gambling past. The quarterback admitted to placing over $90,000 in bets on his own team, something the league does not allow.

Even though Texas Tech decided to overlook that part and even had a Texas judge to vote against the NCAA’s ban, the NFL is not going to allow this to become the headline that surrounds them.

The league is not imposing a complete ban. Just that he will not be able to get drafted this year. It means he will be eligible next season if he places a request on time.

Fans tear into NFL’s double standards over Brendan Sorsby

Football fans are aware that the NFL is very strict when it comes to its players and gambling. They have suspended and banned players for a considerable period, or even permanently.

With Brendan Sorsby, the league knows that his arrival would paint the league in a negative light. But their attempts to avoid a PR disaster looked hypocritical, at least in the eyes of fans. They asked how the league could take this decision when it essentially encourages fans to bet.

Moreover, some asked how the league has been lenient towards domestic violence offenses, or even some gambling instances, and now would not allow Sorsby a chance. Check out examples of those reactions below.

Sorsby could turn his life around. All he needs to do is stay clear of gambling and check into rehab again to make a statement of his intent to get better. Then he can hope to play in the league.

Brendan Sorsby’s attorneys to approach NFLPA for help

While the NFL’s decision is now almost set in stone, nothing in this country truly is. With time before the deadline in their hands, Brendan Sorsby’s attorneys are going to fight the league over this.

Brendan Sorsby’s attorney, Jeffrey Kessler, tells ESPN of the NFL’s decision to not hold a supplemental draft: “It is a violation of the CBA and the law. We will pursue this immediately with the NFLPA.”

Approaching the NFLPA could give them some support in their efforts to get their client a chance to enter the league. However, under the current CBA, the league reserves the right to cancel a supplementary draft if it deems it necessary. Therefore, the 6’3″ signal caller will have to wait and see how it works out.
