The Carolina Panthers have already made one of the big calls late into the 2022/23 NFL season for their upcoming year. The Panthers passed over interim head coach Steve Wilks for the role of the permanent head coach.

This was even after Wilks led the Panthers to a 6-6 finish this season after Matt Rhule was fired in October. Wilks was almost the unanimous choice to take over the role before Frank Reich’s appointment came in.

Wilks’ impressive work with the franchise almost led them to an NFC South division, finishing second behind the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Panthers’ reluctance to hire Wilks has fired up an age-long debate about potential discrimination on the basis of race.

Wilks’ New York legal team, who leads his racial discrimination suit against the NFL, expressed their shock at the recent developments. However, Wilks has not claimed any malice despite being looked over.

The 53-year-old posted a heartfelt goodbye note for the Panthers fans on his official Twitter account. He claimed that he was disappointed but not defeated while also congratulating Frank Reich on taking over his position.

“The sun rose this morning and by the grace of God so did I,” Wilks wrote. “I’m disappointed but not defeated. Many people aren’t built for this but I know what it means to persevere and see it through.”

“It was an honor for me to coach those men in the Carolina Panthers locker room as the interim head coach. Players, coaches and staff, thank you for your hard work and dedication. I took pride in representing Charlotte, a great city that I love so much.

“Thank you to my family, friends and the community for your overwhelming support. I do wish Frank Reich all the best. I will always be a fan of the Carolina Panthers Football Team.”

In a notable omission, from his farewell note, the head coach did not mention Panthers owner David Tepper’s name. Steve Wilks’ post on Twitter was met with some exceptional messages from the fans who thanked the head coach for his time with the franchise. Check out a few fan reactions –

It is a real shocker that Wilks won’t be the head coach for the Panthers next season. Overall, fans had a really tough time accepting the decision taken by the Panthers hierarchy.
