Alex Ovechkin, the captain of the Washington Capitals has shown no signs of taking a quick break in the ongoing 2022-23 season. Despite him being 37 years old, he is bolting forwards with the Great One in sight. Just a few days back, the Great Eight created history by joining the golden 800th club.
In NHL only three people are allowed to inscribe their name in the exclusive club with the members being, Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, and Alex Ovechkin. Ovie scored his 800th hat trick on December 13 against the Chicago Blackhawks.
The whole arena chanted his name, while many threw their caps in recognition of his achievements. Of course, a beer shower was on the way after the match. Washington’s captain got drowned in both beer and praise shower for creating this extraordinary moment.
Alex Ovechkin is only 1-goal away from crossing Gordie Howe
Now only the legendary Gordie Howe is shying away from 1-goal. After passing Howe’s all-time record, Alex Ovechkin will only have Wayne Gretzky on his site. While his NHL climb continues, Ovie’s marketing team has been working on a “multilayered marketing and business platform, as per ESPN’s Emily Kaplan.
The RMNB reported that Ovie trademarked ‘The Gr8 Chase’, donned with a sick logo on it. Kaplan wrote, “Ovechkin’s family was heavily involved in the creation of the logo, as well as the trademark name”.
“‘THE GR8 CHASE’ is a triple entendre, alluding to Ovechkin’s nickname (‘The Great Eight’), Gretzky’s nickname (‘The Great One’) and Ovechkin’s chase of history.” One of the illustrations points to the sky indicating a personal tribute to his brother who passed away during childhood, Sergei.
The Great Eight named his first child after his brother, as ESPN stated that his family “was heavily involved” in the creation of the logo. Considering his current pace, Ovie is expected to cross Gretzky’s record by the 2024-25 season. His contract with Capitals runs till the 2025-26 campaign, so practically he’s on the safe side.
Ovie hit the historical 800-goal mark in 1,305 games, while The Great One scored his 800th goal in 1,116 NHL career games. Howe stands with an NHL score of 801 and Gretzky with 894. Ovie is 94 goals away from reaching the milestone.
