Mikaela Shiffrin, the queen of skiing, has once again tied a historical record of Ingemar Stenmark with her dazzling performance at Giant Slalom, Are, Sweden. Banking her 86th win, the 27-year-old mentioned the legend on the TV6 camera from the lakeside resort.
It is expected that with her Saturday run, she’ll be able to cross Ingemar’s record. Federico Brignone and Sara Hector banked second and third spots with Shiffrin capturing 0.64 seconds clear of Brignone to clear the final round.
Mikaela Shiffrin basted off during the first round while putting a 0.58 seconds lead into the second period run. She admitted being baffled at what she just accomplished when her two competitors came forward to congratulate the queen. Her incredible records boast wins across all Alpine disciplines with 52 slalom wins, 20 giant slalom, 5 super-G, 5 parallel, 3 downhill, and 1 Alpine combined.

After the race, she looked into the camera, mentioning Ingemar Stenmark, “No matter what I do, it doesn’t ever compare to what you achieved”. “Maybe I get the 87th victory, maybe not. But for me, the biggest dream is to be mentioned in the same sentence as you.”
“It’s one of the few runs in my life where, while I was skiing it, I was thinking, ‘This is good'”. “This is a spectacular day. I just wanted to fight for it”. “It’s amazing, incredible.” “When I was little, I would never have believed some day I would be in this position”. “The whole day I was trying not to focus on that”, Shiffrin noted.
Even earlier in the race, Ingemar commented that he may not be able to be present during her race, but he’ll watch it on TV. Ingemar didn’t shy away from praising the young star stating that 86 won’t be a stop for her. If she wishes, she can go up to 100 wins or more.
He told Associated Press, “She’s much better than I was. You cannot compare”. Following her win, she raced toward her mother and her coach, hugging them in excitement, joy, and relief. It was in December 2012, when she won her first World Cup race in Are, and now in 2023, she went back to equaling the record with the greatest legend ever.
Lindsey Vonn who also tried to surpass Ingemar’s record was unable to do so, as she was forced to retire early. Her injuries kept her from competing further. Earlier this year, Shiffrin went ahead shattering Vonn’s record, as the 38-year-old complimented her on social media.
