Seth Rollins continues to answer questions about the decision that changed his WWE career more than a decade ago. In June 2014, Rollins betrayed The Shield during a shocking episode of Monday Night Raw.

He attacked Roman Reigns with a steel chair before turning on Dean Ambrose and then later joining hands with Triple H and Randy Orton, who were part of The Authority. The moment ended one of WWE’s most popular factions and established Rollins as one of the company’s top villains.

The betrayal took place after The Shield had become one of WWE’s most dominant groups. Rollins, Reigns, and Ambrose had debuted together in 2012 and quickly became a major force in the company. Their breakup came as a surprise to fans, making Rollins’ attack one of the most memorable moments in company history.

More than 12 years later, the moment continues to follow Rollins. Fans still approach him to ask why he turned against his former teammates.

I don’t think even to this day, this was in 2014, so we’re talking 12 years later. To this day I get people that come up to me and ask me, ‘why did you betray the shield?’ We knew it was going to be a moment in time because we were such a beloved group.

Seth Rollins said via ESPN Originals.

Rollins’ comments reflect the long-term impact of The Shield’s breakup. The faction had built a strong connection with WWE fans before the betrayal, which made the angle especially memorable.

Rollins also acknowledged that the group’s popularity made the moment feel significant from the beginning. The decision was not simply another storyline development for the faction and ultimately became a defining moment in the careers of all three members.

The betrayal also created a new direction for Rollins. After turning on Reigns and Ambrose, he joined The Authority and began establishing himself as a singles star, winning his first world title at WrestleMania 31 by cashing in Money in the Bank and pinning none other than Reigns in the main event.

Moreover, Reigns also became one of WWE’s biggest stars in the form of The Tribal Chief, while Ambrose later left the company and performed as Jon Moxley in AEW back in 2019.

Despite the careers that followed, the 2014 betrayal remains a major part of Rollins’ WWE history. His latest comments confirm that fans continue to remember the moment and ask about his decision years after it happened.

The WWE Superstar referenced a famous line from The Office while explaining his views on superstition. Rollins said his perspective changed after Danhausen became part of the wrestling world. He also referred to the New York Knicks while discussing the possibility of curses affecting sports teams.

I’m not superstitious, but I am a little stitious. I didn’t believe in curses at all, but then this little vampire guy showed up on my wrestling show; his name’s Danhausen, and he’s got this thing [where] he says, ‘You are cursed.’ Now, the New York Knicks, they hadn’t won an NBA title in 50 seasons, something crazy like that. This guy comes in, and he uncurses the Knicks, and they win 13 straight playoff games.

The Buffalo Bills have reached four Super Bowls but lost all four. Their most recent playoff campaign ended in the divisional round against the Denver Broncos after Buffalo defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars in the wild-card round.

Rollins’ comments about the Bills came as he discussed the broader idea of sports curses. His remarks added another topic to a recent run of conversations in which the WWE star has discussed sports, wrestling and memorable moments from his career.
