With a net worth of $14 million, it’s hard to imagine Shannon Sharpe would have any regrets. But he certainly does, as he recently opened up about one major investment regret from his NFL days playing for the Baltimore Ravens, that cost him a chance to be a billionaire.
After signing with the Ravens in 2000, the legendary tight end was presented with an opportunity to invest in a startup which is now worth trillions. But since it’s the amount he would have been investing was $300,000, he took the advice of his financial advisor and turned it down.
That startup was none other than Sergey Brin and Larry Page’s Google founded in 1998. The concept of the internet was quite new at that time, let alone a search engine like Google. Sharpe was keen on investing in Google stocks, whose initial stock projection was $85, but upon listing, it increased to $115.
“Remember when Google came out and they thought the shares were going to open up about $85 a share?” shared the three-time Super Bowl champion, on the Club Shay Shay podcast.
At the time, his financial advisor might have been right since Google was a startup. But the sports analyst has deep regrets for not listening to his guts and missing out on such a big opportunity.

Google wasn’t the only company that Sharpe was interested in, he also had a chance to purchase some Netflix stock. But he also turned this down and both these ended up becoming his biggest regrets.
Since retiring from the NFL, Sharpe has built a grand career in the media industry with his appearances on ESPN and FOX along with his own podcasts. Though it took time, the 56-year-old made himself a millionaire with $14 million net worth.
