SummerSlam is right around the corner and WWE has already confirmed three matches for the two-night spectacle in Minneapolis. For those wondering about the total number of matches across both nights, the number could go up to 13 with there being a possibility of adding a 14th one to make it seven matches per night.

It was mentioned by Dave Meltzer during Wrestling Observer Radio. Cory Hays of False Finish noted that the fans should expect 14 matches for this year’s SummerSlam, which will be one more than what they got at last year’s edition of the event. One thing to keep an eye on would be the placement of commercials, which sabotaged the entire flow of this year’s WrestleMania.

The incessant adverts resulted in the majority of night one matches at WrestleMania 42 going under 10 minutes. Even though WWE did cut back on them the very next night, the over-commercialization of WWE programming, especially on PLEs, isn’t expected to stop anytime soon with the $1.6 bn ESPN deal in place.

However, a slight reprieve moving forward could make the viewing experience much more watchable for those at home. SummerSlam would be the litmus test for how WWE would likely treat its ‘Big 4’ shows of the year at a time when the audience is piqued with endless commercials and declining product quality.

Moreover, the company has to fill as many seats as they possibly can at the US Bank Stadium for SummerSlam. The venue has an official seating capacity of over 66,000 with an expandable room for almost 73,000 people. While selling out both nights would be a pipe dream for WWE, they’d at least hope to sell over 50,000 tickets per night to create an illusion of a full house on television.

The company struggled massively with the ticket sales for this year’s WrestleMania. A number of factors including price gouging and running the same venue in back-to-back years came to bite WWE back. The ticket pricing range for SummerSlam isn’t WrestleMania bad and WWE is also offering 25% off on tickets for all domestic live events including SummerSlam through July 6.

What matches have been announced for SummerSlam?

This week’s Raw confirmed two blockbuster matches for SummerSlam. At first, Brock Lesnar accepted Oba Femi‘s challenge but only on the condition that they’ll fight inside Hell in a Cell. Now that it has been made official, it’s going to be the first HIAC match at SummerSlam since The Undertaker vs. Edge one in 2008.

Next, Roman Reigns will defend the World Heavyweight Championship against his longtime rival Seth Rollins in what could possibly be their last singles match ever. They haven’t wrestled one-on-one on a WWE PLE since when they collided at Royal Rumble in 2022.

Back then, Rollins won the match via disqualification but ‘The OTC’ retained the then-Universal Championship as it didn’t change hands in that manner. As Rollins mentioned on this week’s Raw, it’s realistically Reigns’ last chance to close the loop with his former Shield brother or else the ghosts of Seth Rollins would haunt him forever.

The women’s world champion Liv Morgan will also defend her title at SummerSlam for the first time since winning it at WrestleMania 42 from Stephanie Vaquer. The Judgment Day member lost the Queen of the Ring finale to Iyo Sky at Night of Champions. ‘The Genius of the Sky’ then chose Morgan as the champion she’d want to face at the Biggest Party of the Summer.

Now speaking of some rumored matches for the event, Cody Rhodes is expected to face CM Punk in a long-awaited showdown. It just remains to be seen if WWE would put the world title back on Rhodes in the meantime to have the championship gold involved in their feud or not.

After losing the triple-threat match at Night of Champions, Gunther went ballistic and put his hands on Nick Aldis. The latter also got physical with ‘The Ring General’ over the Austrian’s condescending behavior and refusal to keep his hands off Aldis. It was noted on Raw that WWE had consequently put Aldis on administrative leave. The follow-up to this is going to be very interesting in the weeks to come.
