The No.1 Polish player on the Tour, Iga Swiatek’s absence from the Billie Jean King Cup came as a big jolt for tennis fans in Poland. The reason for this sudden decision, though could have been anticipated.

After a dominating season in 2023, where Iga Swiatek looked almost invincible, this season, she looked great only in patches. Her semi-final round loss against Jessic Pegula in the United Cup 2023 was a big wake up call for her. Subsequently, she also was knocked out in the fourth round of the Australian Open by Elena Rybakina. This defeated invincibility clout that had developed around her last year.

Although, she won the final against Jessica Pegula in the Qatar Open, she was ill. She then lost to Barbora Krejcikova the final of the Dubai Tennis Championships. She suffered from a rib injury during the course of the Indian Wells Open, which caused her to withdraw from the Miami Open. Subsequently, she also announced her decision to not play in the Billie Jean King Cup.

She shared this news with her fans and public on social media.

Although, Iga Swiatek’s WTA ranking of World No.1 will not be threatened from her absence in this tournament. Her competitors will get a chance to close the gap. Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula who are the current World No.2 and 3 respectively, will be able to earn more ranking points.
