Swedish legend Mats Wilander gives a prediction on Kazakh World No.25 Elena Rybakina. Being scheduled to meet Belurasian World No.5 Aryna Sabalenka in the finals of the Australian Open 2023 on Saturday, the words from the Swedish can boost her confidence. According to him, the Kazhakh could play at least 10 Grand Slam finals in the future. He also opined that looking back after five years, she might not consider playing an Australian Open final as such a “huge thing“.

Wilander quoted, “It’s huge now, but in five years it’s not huge, because she’s going to make 10 Grand Slam finals with that kind of game and personality. She’s so calm and mellow throughout, she’s just starting out. The tournament isn’t over, it’s the semi-finals, and the goal is to win the tournament and win many more of these.

The Kazhak overcame former Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka in the semi-finals: 7-6(7-4), 6-3. After holding her nerves while facing three break points at 5-5 in the first set, Rybakina outperformed Azarenka with her aggressive tennis for the rest of the match. The 23-year-old is reaching her second major finals now. The first one was in Wimbledon 2022 where she defeated the Tunisian World No.2 Ons Jabeur in 3 sets. (Souce of Wilander’s quotes: Eurosport)

The 23-year-old Kazhak Elena Rybakina‘s ability to show up in important matches is what makes her the champion she is now. When Plan A doesn’t work, she is ready to try something different and solve the problems in between the match. The change in strategy on days when the opponent starts running with the match is something the Kazakh has done quite well in the recent past.

The final in Wimbledon 2022 was an example of pure determination and grit by the Kazhak. She didn’t fail to believe in herself even when the Tunisian Opponent Ons Jabeur took the first set. Her mental strength was not hanging in the ropes even while playing the first major final of her career. The impact of that mindset resulted in making her win the following two sets and becoming the first Kazhak ever to win a Grand Slam title(male or female). The final score of the Wimbledon 2022 final was 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

The chances for the 23-year-old took greater heights during this year’s Australian Open after she defeated the tournament favorite and World No.1 Iga Swiatek in the fourth round. The aggressive baseliner is now two sets away from her first hard-court Grand Slam title. The final is against Aryna Sabalenka who is playing her first Grand Slam final.
