Serena Williams‘ husband and co-founder of Reddit, Alexis Ohanian, paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Sean Taylor, an American Footballer who played in the National Football League (NFL). It was the 15th death anniversary of Taylor, who tragically passed away at the young age of 24 – a victim of gun violence.

On November 18, 2007, burglars had broken into Sean Taylor’s Miami residence intending to commit theft. While rifling through drawers and a safe, they caused a commotion that led Taylor to the scene. Upon spotting Taylor, one of the intruders opened fire and shot him in the upper leg. The bullet severed a femoral artery, causing extensive blood loss. Taylor succumbed to his injuries the following day. He was survived by his fiance Jackie Garcia, and their 18-month-old daughter – also named Jackie, both of whom had emerged unharmed from the scene of the crime.

Alexis Ohanian, a well-known NFL fan took to Twitter to share his thoughts on Taylor’s 15th death anniversary. He shared a picture of himself in a Redskins (Taylor’s team) jersey, standing behind a banner. While the banner is not entirely in the frame, it can be gauged that it says “Sean Taylor #21”.

The 39-year-old Ohanian shared the picture in response to the official account of the Washington Commanders (formerly the Redskins) tweeting an image of Taylor’s teenage daughter Jackie joining them for practice. Ohanian’s response was captioned “My dad made and brought this banner for years after his passing. #RIP21 wish I had a better photo of it — we had to sneak it in a few times because of blanket signs bans, too…”.

Sean Michael Maurice Taylor played in the NFL for 4 seasons. He was a member of the Washington Commanders (formerly Redskins) and played in the Free Safety position. He was selected fifth overall in the first round during the 2004 NFL draft by the Redskins.

Taylor had been an active athlete since his school days. In high school, he led his team from Gulliver Prep to a state championship in Florida and set the record for single-season touchdowns. He went to college at the University of Miami, and as a college footballer, he was a member of the 2001 BCS National Championship, receiving unanimous All-American honors.

Due to his tackling abilities, teammates had nicknames Sean “Meast” – a portmanteau forged from the expression ‘half man’ and ‘half beast’. In 2021, the team retired his jersey number (21) to honor him, making him only the third person ever to have received this honor in the course of the team’s ninety years history. Sean Taylor was posthumously inducted into Washington’s Ring of Fame in 2008.
