“We have a responsibility,” Daniil Medvedev supports Iga Swiatek’s stance on Potapova controversy
Daniil Medvedev is just two steps away from yet another title this season, ready for the semis clash against Frances Tiafoe.
Medvedev and Swiatek
At a recent press conference, Iga Swiatek expressed that top players should take a more active role in speaking out on important issues like the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Daniil Medvedev, who has previously voiced his thoughts on the matter, agreed with Swiatek’s assessment. Swiatek’s comments were prompted by a recent controversy involving WTA CEO Steve Simon’s remarks to Lesia Tsurenko regarding the situation in Ukraine.
During his press conference at the Indian Wells Open on Wednesday, Daniil Medvedev fielded questions about the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The topic came up in light of recent remarks by Iga Swiatek, who had commented on an outfit worn by Russian player Anastasia Potapova that was deemed inappropriate before her match.
Speaking in the press conference, Medvedev replied to Swiatek’s take on the controversy and said, “It’s a difficult subject. Of course, I don’t know the details. It is perhaps more up to her (Tsurenko) to answer, because I was not aware of this story. (…) I know that we have a responsibility (on the Potapova case) and I am really sorry for all the Ukrainian players and what they are going through, but I have always said the same thing: I am for peace in the whole world. That’s all I can say. I am for peace. So I will continue with the same answer.”
Expressing her view on the matter, the current World No. 1 suggested that players like herself, who are in a more favorable financial position, have a responsibility to work towards finding a solution to the conflict. However, she acknowledged that she was unsure about what a viable solution would entail.
Daniil Medvedev eyes on another title after reaching the semis
Daniil Medvedev is set to face Frances Tiafoe in the semifinals on Saturday after his recent victory secured his spot. Tiafoe secured his spot in the semifinals by defeating Cameron Norrie in the quarterfinals, winning the match in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-4.
With a 4-0 lead in their head-to-head record, Medvedev will be aiming to extend his dominance over Tiafoe when they face off during the upcoming weekend. The winner of their match will likely go on to face either the Italian, Jannik Sinner, or top seed Carlos Alcaraz in the final showdown.
Medvedev has a wonderful opportunity to extend his win-loss record but he will be needing to bring his best game in the next matches. All the other three players in the semis are very skilled as well and it will be an intense semis for sure.
